Bachelor of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies

USA

What will I learn?

The interdisciplinary major and minor sequences in Women's and Gender Studies supports the University commitment to diversity and social justice through courses that open discussion about the ways in which gender constructs our lives and institutions. These courses focus on gender identity issues in academic study, consider feminist perspectives and philosophy, and challenge assumptions about women’s roles and gender in American and world cultures. Women's and Gender Studies courses are open to all undergraduates - women and men - and most offer general education credit to meet diverse IWU requirements.

Women's and Gender Studies Learning Goals

Through the major courses in Women's and Gender Studies, students will learn to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of feminist perspectives on human experience and to communicate that understanding through written and oral work.
  • Analyze the roles of women in history, both in American society and globally.
  • Analyze the social and cultural constructions of gender that shape women's and men’s daily lives in contemporary society.
  • Articulate how women have co-created with men knowledge in all areas of human endeavor.
  • Discuss differences related to gender and gender identity in the context of age, ability, race, class, religion, sexual orientation, and national origin.
