What will I learn?

The Department of Teaching & Learning offers instruction leading to New York State initial and professional certification to teach the following subjects in Grades 7-12: English, Mathematics, the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics), and Social Studies. Certificates for teaching in New York State are automatically accepted for teaching in many other states.

Required history courses..............................43-46 credits

I. EUROPE (10-11 credits)
Three courses; at least one should be 200-level and one must be upper-division; at least one must be History.

II. UNITED STATES (10-11 credits)
Three courses; at least one should be 200-level and one must be upper-division; at least one must be History.

III. AFRICA, AMERICAN INDIANS, ASIA (including Russia), LATIN AMERICA, MIDDLE EAST (10-11 credits)
Three courses; at least one should be 200-level and one must be upper-division; at least one must be History.

IV. GEOGRAPHY/ECONOMICS (9 credits)
GEO213 Economic Geography OR
GEO201 Human Geography
AND either one additional Geography course and one Economics course OR two Economics courses

V. POLITICAL SCIENCE (4 credits)
POL216 American Government and Politics OR
POL227 International Politics OR
POL229 Introduction to Comparative Politics

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To qualify for the BS in Electrical Engineering + MS in Electrical Engineering program, students must have completed the first semester of their junior year in residence at SUNY New Paltz with an overall SUNY New Paltz GPA of at least 3.0.

For international students

Students must have a high school degree and a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or an 85% grade average or higher).

English Language Proficiency: TOEFL iBT – 80; IELTS - 6.5; PTE Academic – 58; Duolingo English Test – 105. Application Deadlines: December 1 for Spring semester (January start); May 1 for Fall semester (August start).

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
