What will I learn?

The bachelor of science in manufacturing and design engineering (MaDE) is the Segal Design Institute’s undergraduate program that culminates in a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering.

The mission of our program is to educate engineers on all aspects of product realization from product design to manufacturing technologies and operations, and to provide students with the ability to integrate various design and manufacturing processes into an effective system.

This mission, as well as the educational objectives listed below, is based on the following paradigm of MaDE:

  • Manufacturing and Design Engineering is an interdisciplinary field.
  • A balanced emphasis on the “design,” the “process,” and the “systems” view of manufacturing is essential.
  • Hands-on experience is required.

Graduates of the undergraduate program in MaDE will:

  • Carry out the wide range of activities inherent in the design and manufacture of world-class products, including product design, materials selection, manufacturing processes and systems design, and product validation.
  • Remain abreast of and effectively use advanced manufacturing and design technology as it evolves, including CAD/CAM/CAE and state-of-the-art manufacturing machinery, tools, and equipment.
  • Integrate different manufacturing processes into an effective system for producing goods that can compete in the world market. This includes production scheduling, inventory management, information systems, and system simulation.
  • Participate in or lead user-centered design projects in the workplace, drawing upon realistic design project experiences and effectively using the design process to convert client wants and needs into design requirements.
  • Effectively work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Be skilled in written and oral presentation of their ideas, particularly in the technologies that are essential in the workplace.
  • Possess a sense of responsibility to their profession and a desire for lifelong learning so that they can effectively adapt to changing demands in their work environment and perform tasks outside their field of expertise.
  • Assume top managerial and leadership roles in the manufacturing environment.
  • Be aware of contemporary global, societal, ethical, and professional issues in the practice of engineering.

Student Outcomes

The following are the student outcomes of the Department of Manufacturing and Design Engineering. When our students complete their degree, we expect them to have:

  • Ability to apply mathematics, science, and engineering principles.
  • Ability to design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  • Ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
  • Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
  • Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
  • Knowledge of contemporary issues.
  • Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

International applicants whose primary language is not English or whose secondary school curriculum has not been in English must submit exam results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

For international students

Applicant must have secondary school record or college record and written statements. Official TOEFL or IELTS scores required for whose first language is not English or whose schooling has not been in English.
