St. George’s University (SGU) aims to bring together top talent and practices from all over the globe and has become a center for academic excellence. SGU has a network of over 20,000 School of Medicine graduates around the world.1 It establishes itself in rewarding careers and have impacted the health and wellness of the global community.
Students have options to start their medical education in Grenada, the UK, or India. Global study opportunities include SGU’s UK Medical Degree Pathway in partnership with Northumbria University at which students can spend up to three years studying in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Another option is for students in India through a collaboration with SGU and the Ramaiah Group of Institutions.
Upon completing Basic Sciences students will progress to 2 years of clinical rotations which take place in over 75 affiliated hospitals in the US and UK. These trusted connections allow students to gain a breadth of knowledge with different specialties across multiple environments and gain valuable international experience.
Incoming students are admitted to SGU on a rolling basis. The School of Medicine has new intakes in August, January and April.
The university was founded in 1976 on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Students get to enjoy the multicultural environment and a campus filled with modern facilities. The island has an exciting mixture of African, English, and French culture. It offers a vibrant mix of food, music, language, activities, and entertainment. English is the official language in Grenada.

Scholarships and funding
International students may be eligible for various scholarships, grants and bursaries. This includes the Global Scholars Bursary and the International Peace Bursary.
Global Scholars Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards when joining the four-year MD Program with St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University (SGU/NU). To be eligible, students must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
International Peace Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards to support their work towards enhancing medical care systems. To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need and the ability to fund the rest of the tuition fees.

St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM) is accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC). GMDC has been recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), which determined that GMDC standards are comparable to U.S. medical schools. As a result, the SGUSOM can participate in the U.S. Department of Education Federal Direct Loan Program and eligible SGUSOM students can receive such federal loans.
Students entering with a bachelor’s degree can follow the traditional four-year MD program. There are also one- to three-year preclinical pathways that lead to the four-year MD program. The preclinical phase includes coursework that prepares students for medical school.
The preclinical phase is the foundational study that gets students ready for the advanced medical phase later in the MD program. It includes the study of preclinical sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Basic Sciences are the first two years of the four-year MD program. Students can complete the entire two years in Grenada, or partly in the UK at Northumbria University. Teaching is through traditional lectures, laboratory sessions, small–group sessions, and case-based learning exercises. Faculties include:
