Program Description

The University of Utah’s Department of Ballet is consistently recognized as one of the top programs in the country, and it is additionally accredited by the National Association of the Schools of Dance (NASD). The Ballet BFA is for serious students interested in a career in ballet or other dance-related fields and requires discipline, dedication, and a willingness to contribute to a collegial and effective learning environment. Honoring and encouraging both creative and scholarly research, the comprehensive curriculum ultimately prepares graduates to successfully pursue a career within the field of dance. This degree offers a balanced course of study that may include an emphasis in Ballet Teaching or a certificate in Studio Teaching. Students must audition before they can be admitted to the ballet program. Upon admission, courses include numerous ‘in studio’ classes as well as critical thinking and creative process classes. An understanding of dance history, pedagogy, kinesiology, and choreographic process is taught simultaneously with concepts in technique, pointe, men’s class, and partnering to prepare students for a career in various facets of the dance field. Learning Outcomes

  • To provide our students a wide spectrum of dance study and related courses through our varied programs and outreach activities, in order to develop versatile and technically proficient artists, who are also sensitive, expressive performers and dedicated teachers.
  • B.F.A students are provided the background necessary for continuing graduate study in M.F.A. programs throughout the United States and abroad.
  • Many of our graduates obtain positions in ballet, contemporary, modern dance, jazz and musical theater companies. Dancers are trained to listen, take direction, have an enhanced ability to focus upon tasks, understand the value of hard work and become good team players. These attributes have been recognized by employers not only in the ballet and dance fields but also in other areas such as arts administration, attorneys, banking, business, photography, movie/video production, massage therapist, nursing, nutritionist, orthopedic surgeons, psychologist, physical therapy, and radiology technicians.
  • Because of the strength of this program and the quality experiences our students receive, we have been able to maintain our reputation with a ranking within the top ten nationally for almost 60 years (ballet in this University started in 1951).

Career Opportunities

With the Ballet BFA, you will be prepared for professional performing and teaching careers. Consider joining a performing arts company, dancing for a television or motion picture studio, or even appearing on Broadway. Graduates can additionally find exciting work in theme parks, resorts, or on cruise ships. Other career opportunities include dance therapy, arts management, event planning, public relations, and choreography.
