What will I learn?

The UCLA Linguistics Department focuses on the scientific study of language in all aspects. The fields represented include phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics, as well as the interdisciplinary areas of psycholinguistics, language acquisition, historical linguistics, and mathematical linguistics. The department has a strong emphasis on linguistic theory as well as on fieldwork and experimental study.

Major Fields or Sub disciplines

Students may specialize in syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics, language change, typology, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and many language areas, notably African languages and American Indian languages. Other specializations may be possible, depending on the availability of faculty expertise.

Course Requirements

To receive the doctoral degree, students are required to take 36 units of graduate course work beyond the master's degree requirements. Normative time to complete these 36 units is by the end of the 10th quarter of graduate study. These units must include Linguistics 210A, 210B, and eight units in an area distinct from that of the student's major area of concentration.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have a minimum score of 570 in paper based TOEFL.

For international students

An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.

IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.

TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
