Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Social Work

What will I learn?

Students who are already enrolled in the Masters of Science in Social Work program may also earn a certificate in veterinary social work. This certificate program will provide students with the coursework and practical experience needed to incorporate and facilitate human-animal interaction programs and interventions in ethically sound ways.

Required Courses

  • SOWK 567 (3 credit hours)
  • SOWK 557 (3 credit hours)
  • SOWK 577 (3 credit hours)
  • For students in the MSSW Evidence-Based Interpersonal Practice (EBIP) concentration, 3 credit hours with assignment in the course on a veterinary social work topic. Select from SOWK 570, SOWK 571, or SOWK 572.
  • For students in the MSSW Organizational Leadership concentration, 3 credit hours with assignment in the course on a veterinary social work topic. Select from SOWK 545, SOWK 548, or SOWK 549.
  • 12 credit hours in a field placement with a veterinary social work component.

Additional Course Requirements

  • Other courses may, where appropriate, be substituted for the courses listed above with the permission of the Director of the Veterinary Social Work Certificate Program (VSW-CP).
  • All graduate certificates require 3 credit hours (1 course) over and above that which is required for the MSSW program.

Non-Course Requirements

  • Attend live web meetings during concentration year.
  • Complete the face to face Veterinary Social Work Intensive and AAI Workshop.
  • Online modules must be completed before face-to-face events.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The applicants are expected to have a baccalaureate degree in an engineering discipline with a GPA of 3.00.

For international students

Applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency. A non-U.S. degree must be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from the United States and must be accredited by its regional or national accreditation agency. Applicants with non-U.S. degrees must have earned a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or other equivalent to a ‘B’ average. If you have completed previous graduate coursework, you must have earned a minimum of 3.3 out of a possible 4.0 GPA or other equivalent to a ‘B+’ average.

An applicant requesting admission to the Graduate School may be required to submit results of the TOEFL or IELTS. Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:

  • a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
  • a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
