What will I learn?

Harnessing the expertise of the Earth Institute's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a world leader in earth sciences, Columbia University’s Master of Science in Sustainability Science develops the skills of full-time and aspiring sustainability professionals in Earth systems observation, analysis, projection, and environmental remediation.

The program focuses on the scientific methods and tools that can be used to observe, monitor, and respond to environmental impacts, enabling a practical application of science to address the critical sustainability issues of our time.

Students are early- and mid-career professionals, with backgrounds in engineering, math, science, and related fields who want to help organizations better understand and address environmental impacts and the systemic risks that arise from environmental change.

As a Graduate

Graduates are prepared to:

  • Use scientific methods to observe and monitor sustainability
  • Analyze and model data to understand the environment
  • Employ scientific tools to respond to pressing sustainability issues
  • Integrate science in the decision-making of organizations

The curriculum is designed and sequenced to develop a new generation of scientific leaders and a pipeline of skilled workforce in sustainability. Students have the flexibility to choose from a variety of courses in order to best prepare them for professional advancement.

The program requires the completion of 36 credits (12 courses) including three required courses. Courses are held primarily in the evenings and the degree can be completed without daytime courses. The program is designed to enable part-time students to maintain full-time employment while enrolled in the program.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Other English Language Requirements:  The minimum TOEFL score expected is 600 (written) or 250 (computer version).

For international students

Applicants must have Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and background in science, math, engineering, or a related field.

English Language Requirement

Applicant must have minimum score of 600 (paper-based test) or 100 (Internet-based test) and minimum IELTS score of 7.0
