What will I learn?

MA in Hispanic Language & Literatures

The MA program in Hispanic Language & Literatures develops an advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish American literature and the traditions, aims, and methods of research scholarship. Advanced proficiency in Spanish is a prerequisite for admission to the program. Please see the department website for details of supporting documentation to be submitted at the time of application.

Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with an MA in Hispanic Language & Literatures are expected to:

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of language and literature in Spanish in a global context and from all historical periods.

Demonstrate writing and research skills appropriate to professional use and observe ethical practices.

Demonstrate a near-native mastery of the Spanish language, including the ability to write in Spanish at a level appropriate to professional use, and to communicate with native Spanish speakers.

Be prepared to teach specific works and literary concepts at the advanced high school level, and work as language instructors at the college level.

Course Requirements

A minimum total of eight term courses (32 units) at the 500 level or above are required, with a minimum of two seminars (CAS LS 850) per term of coursework. For details regarding required course sequences, see the graduate program handbook.

No transfer of units normally shall be granted toward the fulfillment of the eight term courses required for the degree.

Language Requirement

Degree candidates are expected to possess a sound command of written and spoken Spanish.

Comprehensive Review

A review of the student's program and progress is conducted by the faculty in lieu of a comprehensive examination.

Those who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or with equivalent international education may apply.

English proficiency

Minimum TOEFL Requirements - paper-based test: 550; internet-based test: Reading section – 21, Listening section – 21, Speaking section – 21, Writing section – 21.

Minimum IELTS Requirements - he overall band score of 7.0 is required for admission to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
