The Master of Arts with a major in music and a concentration in composition is a 36-hour degree with thesis and includes the common core (15 hours), plus three possible options for the remaining 21 required hour.

The Master of Arts with a major in music and a concentration in musicology is a 35-hour degree with thesis, including the common core (15 hours), plus the following requirements for the remaining 20 hours.

The Master of Arts with a major in music, a concentration in musicology and an emphasis in early music performance is a 37-hour degree with thesis, including the common core (15 hours) plus the following requirements for the remaining 22 hours.

The Master of Arts with a major in music and a concentration in ethnomusicology is a 37-hour degree with thesis, including the common core (15 hours, listed above), plus the following requirements for the remaining 22 hours.

The Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in music theory is a 36-hour degree with thesis: Common Core (15 hours) plus the following requirements for the remaining 21 hours.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent).

For international students

Qualified applicants will be expected to have an undergraduate degree in music composition, a portfolio of works, a consistent record of performances, and a commitment to the field of composition as a profession. Applicants without a degree in composition will be considered if they can demonstrate competency and potential as a composer, and have successfully completed the following undergraduate courses: Instrumentation, Electro acoustic/Computer Music, 18th-Century Counterpoint, Form and Analysis, Composition lessons (at least two semesters).

English Language Proficiency: Minimum TOEFL score requirement is 79; Minimum IELTS score is 6.0; Minimum PTE score is 53.
