What will I learn?

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music offers a broad and encompassing approach to the study of music, aspiring to the highest level of musical performance, analysis, pedagogy, and creativity within a wide range of traditions. These include classical, jazz, popular and traditional music from around the world, as well as emerging forms in composition and new media. Our groundbreaking research extends across disciplines and into all aspects of musical life, embracing history, culture, politics, ethnography, criticism, pedagogy, theory, performance, composition, and musical thought as both discourse and cultural practice. Honoring all musical traditions and maintaining a balanced emphasis on scholarship and practice, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music pioneers new models for integrated musical studies by embracing an innovative degree program in Global Jazz Studies and a minor in Music Industry. Situated in a city known for its exceptionally vibrant and diverse musical communities, the school prioritizes civic outreach, bringing the transformative experience of music to the public while nurturing a sense of purposeful engagement among its faculty and students.

Entry requirements

For international students

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Music. Other fields of study are accepted if applicants have the musical training and musicianship necessary to pursue graduate work. Transcripts must show an average grade of at least B in the basic areas that normally constitute the undergraduate core curriculum in music (harmony, counterpoint, music history, analysis, and musicianship).

IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.

TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
