Concentrate Your MSCSIT in Computer Science

Computer Science combines theoretical understanding with hands-on work, enabling students to understand the basics of computation and build secure databases and systems that help the virtual world flourish.

Sacred Heart University’s Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (MSCSIT) degree prepares individuals for leadership roles in the CS industry. The coursework in our program represents a realistic balance between CS foundational theory and applied hands-on technical courses. Core classes include courses in the following areas: Data Structures, Cryptography, Software Engineering, Database and Operating Systems, Programming Languages, Networking, Cyber Security, and Theory of Computation. Electives include Algorithms, Discrete Structures and Logic, Advanced Computer Gaming, Mobile Application Development, Data Warehousing, Web Development and Cloud Computing.

  • Minimum of 36 credit hours of graduate-level coursework
  • Additional 6 hours of prerequisite coursework may be required
  • Students with an undergraduate degree in Computer of Information Science may receive waivers for some courses
  • Course waivers are not granted for work experience
  • A thesis is not required, but students who elect to complete a thesis must enroll in CS 690 and CS 691 (Thesis I and II)
  • Students who do not complete a thesis must complete at least three credits of CS 670 (Research Project Seminar)
  • Degrees are granted upon satisfactory completion of all coursework and a favorable recommendation of the faculty responsible for CS 690/691 or CS 670.

Electives may be chosen from any of the IT course offerings. It is at the discretion of the academic program director to approve any other CS or MBA course offering as an appropriate elective.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

International graduate students must possess the equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

For international students

An earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent institution as determined by Sacred Heart University, is required to be conferred by the SHU admissions deadline (October 1).

Applicants educated outside the U.S. must utilize a transcript evaluation service to verify their degree and course work. The academic record must show credits and grades equivalent to those given by U.S. institutions of higher learning.

English Language Requirements: TOEFL PBT: 570; TOEFL iBTL: 80, IELTS: 6.5 (EXCEPTION: Computer Science, IT, Chemistry, Healthcare Informatics may consider IELTS 6.0), SHU ESL Exam: 80% (must be approved by SHU), PTE: 62; iTEP: 5, Cambridge Advanced English: 58, Completion of ELS 112 or EF Level C1
