Every industry needs trained statisticians. With a master's degree in statistics from Portland State, you'll have the knowledge and skills you need to advance your career in almost any field, including education, science, technology, health care, government, or business.

In our program, you will explore real-world applications as you equip yourself with the quantitative tools needed to analyze and interpret complex data. You'll gain skills that are highly sought-after in government, industry and academia.

Our master's in statistics prepares you to teach at colleges and universities or work as statisticians in a variety of settings, from hospital systems and banks to utility companies and planning organizations. You can also use the degree as a starting point for doctoral programs in statistics, biostatistics, economics, marketing, finance, bioinformatics, and data science.


PSU's master's degree in statistics provides you with advanced training in theoretical and applied statistics, exposure to cutting-edge research through our faculty and weekly seminars, consulting experience and a chance to explore a problem in-depth through a master's research paper and presentation.

Our expertly crafted coursework, including a doctorate-level sequence in statistical learning, equips you with the statistical, mathematical and computational techniques you'll need to succeed in the emerging field of data science.

We believe the strength of our program lies in our diverse faculty who bring their expertise and real-world applications of mathematical statistics, sampling theory, survival analysis, nonparametric methods, applied probability, reliability theory, re-sampling methods, image analysis, statistical learning into your classes.

Statistical consulting is also part of the program, providing you with an opportunity to work as a quantitative expert to solve important research problems brought in by clients, both inside and outside the university.

Our program director provides one-on-one advising, helping you develop an individualized course of study that best meets your interests, and providing guidance as you apply to doctoral programs and jobs. Teaching and research assistantships are also available.


Demand is high for statisticians and projected to grow 33 percent over the next 10 years as businesses will need their skills to analyze an increasing volume of digital and electronic data, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. PSU's master's degree in statistics prepares you to do just that.

Our graduates work in a variety of jobs and settings, including OHSU, Kaiser Permanente, Portland General Electric, Bonneville Power Administration, Intel, Google, Standard Insurance, Wells Fargo, the U.S. Census Bureau, Portland Community College, University of Portland, and University of Washington.

Others have continued their studies, well-prepared for the rigors of Ph.D. programs in statistics, mathematical sciences, or a related field.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be admitted to PSU for a master’s program, applicants must satisfy University requirements and be accepted by the academic department in which the graduate study will occur. Admission eligibility is based on receipt of a baccalaureate degree equivalent to a United States four-year bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized as an institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education in the relevant country or be regionally accredited within the U.S. Regular Admission: To be considered for regular admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or the equivalent (on the U.S. 4.0 scale). Applicants who have earned 9 or more letter-graded graduate credits must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent; this graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA.

For international students

Admission requires a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited institution.

English Language Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall score with minimum subscores of 6.5 in reading and writing

TOEFL score of Paper-based: 550 overall; 22 in writing with 20 in reading and listening

TOEFL score of Internet-based: Minimum overall score of 80 with minimum subscores of 18 in reading and writing

PTE - Academic: 60 overall
