What will I learn?

Geologic & tectonic research at UCLA follows a tradition of excellence in the study of the growth and demise of mountain belts, basin analysis, remote sensing, and surficial processes. Our faculty and researchers combine field research with computer modeling, geochemical analysis, geochronology, petrology, and satellite image analysis to understand Earth evolution and the geologic record of plate interactions.

Areas of Study

The program in geology offers study in geobiology, geochronology, geomorphology, micropaleontology, mineralogy, organic geochemistry, pale biology, pale climate, paleontology, petrology, sediment logy, stratigraphy, structural geology, and tectonics. Other comparable areas of study are also possible.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have a minimum score of 570 in paper based TOEFL.

For international students

A bachelor's degree in geology, biology, chemistry, physics, or other science is required.

Applicants must have outstanding records in the relevant basic sciences and mathematics.

Qualified students may proceed directly toward the Ph.D., although most obtain the M.S. degree in the process.

IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.

TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
