Mathematics is a universal language which allows us to describe abstract concepts and natural phenomena. It has aesthetic beauty and practical application.
Why Choose Mathematics?
This program is for individuals who hope to pursue the PhD in Mathematics or a related discipline, or who wish to teach mathematics in a community college. Students in the M.S. in Mathematics program interested in obtaining a Ph.D. receive individual attention from faculty in the way of independent studies and guidance during their Ph.D. application process.
Career Outcomes
Students from our department have been successful in obtaining acceptances into Ph.D. programs in mathematics including those at Brandeis University, Wesleyan University, Syracuse University, and Lehigh University.
Flexibility and Time to Completion
This program may be completed on either a full-time or a part-time basis. Qualified undergraduates may begin graduate classes as upperclassmen, thereby enabling completion of the MS degree in a single postgraduate year plus two summers. Students who are undergraduates at Manhattan College are able to count six credits of graduate coursework toward both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
What Will You Learn?
As a graduate student in the mathematics program, you will study foundational areas of pure mathematics: linear and abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, topology and probability-statistics.
You may take electives:
to include additional foundational courses in preparation for the Ph.D.
to do research, and may include a thesis option.
to deepen your knowledge of the mathematics of data analytics and machine learning.
to connect the concepts of analysis to computational mathematics.
If you want to pursue research in a particular topic, our faculty members are eager to collaborate with you, and mentor you to present your work at professional conferences.
What Will You Do?
In addition to preparing you for teaching or for further graduate study, an advanced mathematics degree is of value in many cognate fields. The problem solving skills you will develop through this degree could be used in cryptography, neuroscience, and biomathematics.

Bachelor's degree in mathematics or adolescent education mathematics from an accredited college or institution. Applicants who possess a degree in a related field may inquire directly with the program director regarding eligibility.
GPA average of 3.00 out of 4.0 or equivalent.
Entering students should have seen, at a minimum, calculus I-II-III, a proof-theoretic linear algebra, and a probability or statistics class. Courses in abstract algebra and real analysis are required, but may be taken at the graduate level if necessary. A major in mathematics is desirable. A course in programming is recommended.
English Language Requirement
However, academically admissible students who have not taken the TOEFL/IELTS, or have scored below the College's standard minimum, are still eligible to enroll into a graduate program with conditional admission into the College's Intensive English Language Program (IELP).
Applicants who do not have TOEFL/IELTS scores are still required to submit all other admissions materials per individual program documents. Please visit the website for specific program requirements. Students who have not submitted TOEFL/IELTS scores, but are accepted into a graduate program, will automatically be required to complete the IELP.
*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
