What will I learn?

The M.S. is awarded upon satisfactory completion of 30 semester hours of graduate work, including the conducting of independent research leading to a dissertation, and a final examination. It is anticipated that candidates will complete the program in two years of full-time residence. Candidates who also are involved in an advanced clinical program whose duration is two years should complete the M.S. program by the end of a third year of study.

The Master of Science program in oral science requires a minimum of 30 s.h. of graduate credit, including 21 s.h. of course work, 9 s.h. of independent research leading to a thesis, and a final examination. M.S. students must spend at least two years in full-time residence at the University of Iowa.

Students pursuing the M.S. normally must be enrolled in a clinical specialty training program offered by a College of Dentistry department. Students should complete the M.S. and the clinical specialty training program in three years of study.

Entry requirements

For international students

A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00.

English Language Requirements:

An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) total score of 7.0, with no sub score less than 6.0.

TOEFL score requirements with score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present iBT scores below 100 on the PBT.

TOEFL score requirements with score of 550 on Paper-based test (PBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present TOEFL scores below 600 on the PBT.
