What will I learn?

The doctoral program in the College of Business at Southern Illinois University prepares qualified individuals for teaching and research positions in academic institutions. Our Ph.D. program is fully accredited by AACSB International and offers a concentration in accounting, finance, management, or marketing. Graduates devote a minimum of three years to full-time study that includes coursework and developing a dissertation that makes an original contribution to knowledge in the graduate’s chosen field.


Our doctoral program in finance provides a strong foundation in financial and economic theory. Through a mix of elective courses and dissertation research, students specialize in particular areas of finance. There are three areas of specialization:

Corporate Finance
Financial Institutions

Graduates of our PhD program in finance go on to successful careers in research and teaching at the university level and have occupied positions at schools .

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree and master's degree; 3.0 on all previous graduate level coursework (approximately a "B+" average) (some exceptions apply).

For international students

To be eligible for admission, applicants must have completed a master's degree or its equivalent. A grade-point average in all graduate-level work of 3.5 (A=4.0) is preferred, but no less than 3.0 is permitted for admission. A score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for admission consideration. The College of Business prefers a score of 600 or better.

The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL; 80 on the internet-based TOEFL; 6.5 on the IELTS; 5.0 on the iTep Academic Plus Exam; C1 required on the Cambridge English Exam.

The application period opens on July 1 of odd-numbered years and applications close on January 15 in the year of admission.
