What will I learn?

Doctor of Philosophy in Cinema & Media Studies remains at the forefront of scholarly work in the cinematic arts. Students tailor their curriculum to their own creative and scholarly interests under the guidance of SCA's world-renowned faculty. Past PhD recipients have published award-winning books and essays, secured tenured positions at the most prestigious universities in the world, and have become influential public intellectuals in a variety of fields.

The entertainment industry is exactly that: an industry, one that encompasses thousands of different careers that span from executive suites to far-reaching production sets, from the classroom to the writers' room. The Division of Cinema & Media Studies provides the kind of in-depth knowledge of media and entertainment that serves as a foundation for jobs at the talent agencies, management firms, production companies, and international studios that develop and distribute media around the globe.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed a master's degree.

For international students

All candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Applicants whose prior study was outside the United States must have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. To verify that your bachelor's degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor degree, as well as learn about specific academic and language requirements you may need for admission.

Applicants to master's programs who have attained an Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) score of 90, with no less than 20 on each sub-score; or an IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6 on each band score.
