The English Language Center

The University of Texas’s (UT) English Language Center has been offering high quality English training since 1965. Seven to eight hundred students come to UT’s English Language Center every year from over 35 countries. Programs are provided at every proficiency level for a variety of learners. These programs include the English Language Program, Academic English Program, short-term programs, and customized programs for organized ESL groups and English as a foreign language teachers. 

All of the English Language Center’s current instructors have graduate degrees, speak at least one foreign language, and have taught, traveled, or lived outside the US. Every instructor has experience working in international education, with many boasting more than 20 years of experience. The English Language Center is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the Commission on English Language Accreditation, and is affiliated with EnglishUSA.

UT has an international community of over 7,000 international students and scholars from over 140 countries. Top countries of origin among ELC students are Saudi Arabia, China, South Korea, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan.

Austin is the capital of Texas, and consistently ranks high on lists of best places to live, work, and have fun. It is currently the 11th largest city in the US, with a population of approximately 995,000. Compared to other cities its size, Austin also has a smaller town feel and a relatively low cost of living. Austin offers lots of parks and green space for outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, and swimming. The climate is warm and there are sunny skies nearly 300 days a year. Austin is also known as the “Live Music Capital of the World." There are over 150 live music venues in and around Austin.
