The research endeavours are supported by the provision of well-equipped research centres and facilities as well as remarkable research grants and funding. PolyU’s research reputation has been acknowledged through numerous international awards received and knowledge transfer to industries and communities.
Internships and entrepreneurship form a core tenet of PolyU’s approach to preparing students for various industries. Students will be able to take advantage of internship opportunities, both locally and internationally, through the Faculty’s intern sponsorships. The international internship destinations include France, Canada, U.S.A., Singapore, Australia, UK and Japan. Further, there is the chance to pursue internships in China via the excellent network and partnerships the Faculty has established. This includes the joint summer internship programme with the Guangdong and Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (GDCIQ/SZCIQ), that has been running since 2011.
The Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles consists of the following four departments:
Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology is an interdisciplinary department that embraces biochemical engineering, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and food science. ABCT’s research facilities in the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park is recognised by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a State Key Lab Incubation Base in Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology.
The Department of Applied Mathematics offers a range of programmes in applied mathematics and statistics. ISI Essential Science Indicators (ESI) has PolyU as a highly cited institution for mathematics. In 2018, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking listed PolyU among the world’s top 100 in subjects of mathematics, and statistics and operational research, and the U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the 52nd Best Global Universities for mathematics.
The Department of Applied Physics conducts cutting-edge research in five major areas: smart materials and devices; nanomaterials; photonic materials and devices; energy materials and devices; theoretical and computational physics. According the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, AP has attained the highest proportion of world leading research work (4*) at PolyU. AP also ranks in 1st place in the materials science and is placed 2nd among all Physics Departments in Hong Kong.
Over the years, the Institute of Textiles and Clothing has trained celebrated designers, talented technologists and researchers who have made a significant contribution to the fashion and textiles industry in Hong Kong and beyond. ITC has established strong regional and global connections, and is a close partner of business and industry.
The following undergraduate programmes are offered by four departments including:
The curriculum of this programme matches the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Recommended Curriculum for a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Undergraduate Major.
This programme offers rigorous education in chemistry and training in laboratory practices. Employment opportunities abound in industries, such as cosmetics and fragrances, drugs and pharmaceuticals, pollution control and the manufacture of printed circuit boards.
This programme is designed to meet the undergraduate degree standards of both the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST).
This programme focuses on the study of modern data analytics needed in the financial industry. Its curriculum design covers subjects such as big data analytics, business intelligence and customer relationship management, machine learning, algorithmic trading and artificial intelligence, which will strengthen students’ data interpretation and analytical skills and support them to develop careers in the evolved investment and finance industries.
Engineering Physics is a unique programme that focuses on the application of physics to engineering. Students gain the ability to analyse and solve practical/engineering problems, which prepares them for complex workplace situations and technological advances.
The programme trains competent professionals for the fashion business including textiles, apparel, retailing, design and entrepreneurship, and offers five specialisations, including technology, design, retail and marketing, intimate apparel and activewear, knitwear design and technology.
The taught postgraduate programmes offered at the Faculty are:
This programme will be jointly taught by academics, experts and practitioners in the field of food safety worldwide. Graduates are qualified to obtain a Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) Core Programme Certificate in Food Safety Risk Analysis issued by JIFSAN and PolyU, and ISO 22000 Certificate issued by an accredited certification body.
This programme provides computational techniques and mathematical modelling which are useful to scientists, engineers and managers. The focus is on the application of computer packages to solve practical problems. It offers two specialisations for selection: Actuarial and Investment Science (AIS) and Decision Science (DS). The curriculums are designed to cover topics in insurance, statistics, decision making, and financial mathematics.
This programme provides a solid theoretical foundation on operational research, risk analysis and statistics to students. They will be equipped to develop an outlook, as well as a powerful methodology, which remains valuable in the dynamic world of business.
The programme is innovative and contemporary, with the aim to respond intuitively to the demands of a vibrant global fashion landscape. Close relationships and interaction with industry provide insights for the workplace and career opportunities for graduates.
A mixed-mode programme with two specialisations for selection: Fashion Merchandising and Global Fashion Management (GFM). The university also offers financial assistance and scholarships to students.
I chose to study at PolyU because I wanted to explore the world, understand different backgrounds and learn to live independently. One of the biggest attractions of PolyU was its curriculum which focuses on practical learning in addition to theoretical learning. Because my field is technical, this attribute really stood out. - Shilpa Gurung, UK (Graduate)
PolyU is a well-known university around the world. Knowing the fact that PolyU graduates are always more favoured by employers, I feel proud as a PolyU graduate. Professional training at PolyU could help me a lot in my future career as this knowledge increases my ability to perform in a job. - Tan Choon Kiat, Malaysia (Graduate)
The PolyU Entry Scholarship I am currently on fully subsidises my academic school fees. This is of great help to me and my family, especially since the fees for an international student like me are not cheap. This full subsidy also allows me to allocate more funds to other areas, like general living expenses, materials for school projects, additional extracurricular classes, and even short overseas study or exposure trips. - Sum Xin Yi, Singapore.
