Two new postgraduate programmes were introduced at the school in 2019:

Master of Science in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics)

HKBU School of Business is launching a new MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) programme. The programme aims to help students develop new insights towards emerging financial technologies, analytics and methods to manage assets, such as blockchain and virtual banks. The programme will be offered on a one-year full-time or two-year part-time basis.

Core topics in the course include machine learning, textual analysis, algorithmic trading, financial fraud, and regulatory compliance. The programme aims to ensure that students will be well prepared to meet the challenges of the current data-driven economy. As a supplement to classroom learning, there are plans to have industry leaders visit the campus for talks and seminars to share industry perspectives and enrich the learning experience of students.

Master of Science in Data Analytics and Business Economics

HKBU School of Business is launching a new MSc in Data Analytics and Business Economics programme in 2019. This programme is a one-year full-time programme offering training in business economic analysis and data analytics. It equips students with statistical models, business economic knowledge, and programming skills, providing business insights and responding to changes in intellectual property policy, competition and regulatory policies. Furthermore, the programme is in line with the HKBU’s ten-year Institutional Strategic Plan for 2018-28, which has identified data analytics and artificial intelligence as one of the research clusters for development.

In order to allow graduates to have practical and balanced training in both the business side and the data science side to add value for corporates and solve real business programmes, experienced industry practitioners have been invited to join in the delivery of the programme.

Global connections

Global connections

HKBU School of Business firmly believes that this is an era in which students need to be exposed to the realities of the professional domain outside geographical borders to confront contemporary challenges. The school’s international exchange programme does just that, by giving students the chance to enhance their academic learning by living in and experiencing different cultures to broaden their outlook.

HKBU School of Business has finalised exchange agreements with more than 200 universities in over 36 countries whereby HKBU students can study abroad for one part of their degree. In developing a quality international network, the school places great emphasis not only on institution rankings but also cultural diversity and global relevance.

Apart from regular semester exchange, programmes on offer as part of this international collaboration include joint double degree programmes with leading global universities, such as a joint MSc in Global Marketing Management with the University of Sheffield in the UK and a joint MSc in Entrepreneurship and Global Marketing with the Grenoble Ecole de Management in France. There is also a dual degree on offer in MBA / MScBM in collaboration with National Taipei University of Business in Taiwan, which automatically entitles the student to a second master’s degree.

The school’s credentials are further reaffirmed by the fantastic, state-of-the-art facilities on offer at the school, some of which are reserved exclusively for the students of the school.

In the Bloomberg Laboratory, students have a chance to see first-hand one of the most powerful systems used by financial professionals. Using the Bloomberg terminal real-time financial market data can be analysed and monitored, in addition to being able to provide news, price quotes, and secure messaging.

The Datastream Laboratory is home to Datastream, which is a data driven service integrating economic research and strategy with asset analysis in one integrated application, something that the asset management industry thrives on.

The Behavioral Research Laboratory (The Lab) is a space that research students and final year undergraduates are allowed to use for their projects. The Simulated Trading Laboratory is where the Fund Management Committee invests real money donated by alumni. In addition the computer laboratories are equipped with over a hundred PCs and SPSS software.

The Learning Corner is the all-encompassing name given to several common learning spaces, including discussion rooms, as well as gardens that provide a conducive environment for brainstorming and collaboration during team projects.

General facilities, which all students can use, include a well-stocked library housing English and Chinese titles, the Wai Hang Sports Centre, a three-star hotel and several coffee shops and restaurants dotting the campus.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Conceived as a global initiative to groom the future leaders of the business world, the International Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) strives to bring the top talent from around the world on to one platform for a postgraduate taught programme. The common attribute of all these young leaders is that they come from diverse backgrounds and have proven leadership potential.

The criteria for admission to the IPS are as follows:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognised tertiary institution
  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL scores) for applicants whose bachelor’s degrees are obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English.
  • Online interview, if needed

There is no need for an individual application for the IPS. Students who apply for a place on one of the school’s eight full-time postgraduate programmes stand a chance of gaining admission to the IPS, based on their competitive academic and interview performances, professional experiences, determination to contribute positively to the business community and the commitment to HKBU’s internationalisation activities during their period of study.
