School of Hotel and Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (SHTM) is one of the largest hospitality and tourism schools in both Asia and the world. It has been awarded many accolades in Asia and globally, including being ranked number one in the world in Hospitality and Tourism Management by ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subject and among the top three in Hospitality and Leisure Management by QS World University Ranking by Subject.

The School has outstanding learning facilities, including a one-of-a-kind, purpose-built teaching and research hotel, Hotel ICON, the first teaching and research hotel of its kind in the world. The hotel has 262 guest rooms and three restaurants, and students work there under the guidance of full-time hospitality professionals undertaking duties typical of real life in a practical environment.

Students have access to a range of career advice resources to help them prepare for job interviews and look for work after graduating. Activities throughout the year include a Career Day as well as a Recruitment Seminar Series. Career Counselling is also offered for those wanting specific advice.

Students benefit from work experience opportunities during their time studying by taking part in a compulsory industry placement. Throughout their time learning, students are visited by guest lecturers from the industry to help them gain a deeper understanding of the industry.

The School is proud of its international community and welcomes close to 1,400 students from around the world, while 71 teaching staff are from over 21 countries and regions. International exchanges are also encouraged, and students have the opportunity to spend some of their time studying in another country, including Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management

This programme provides advanced research training based on career aspirations and individual interests, allowing students to nurture their ability to finish important research in specific areas of tourism or hospitality.

Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management (DHTM)

The course is developed for academics who seek a professional doctorate in the field of hotel and tourism management.

MSc in Global Hospitality Business

The degree is offered jointly by School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lausanne Hotel School, and the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Held across the three well-known institutions located on three continents, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the business practices and culture of each destination.

MSc in International Hospitality Management

The programme helps students develop management skills, industry practice, and research competencies in the hospitality industry through interdisciplinary subject exposure, decision-making theory, problem identification, and management application.

The other MSc programmes offered at The School are in subjects including International Tourism and Convention Management, and International Wine Management.

BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management

This course educates students relating to the business of hotel management and food service management. The customer-service focus of the programme helps the graduates to do well in a broad range of complex, managerial and specialised work activities in the hotel and food service industry.

BSc (Hons) in Tourism and Events Management

This programme consists of both the theoretical as well as the practical elements of business tourism combined with an inclination in customer-service to produce graduates who are skilled to perform in tourism and events industry positions.

In 1999, The School was listed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as one of its International Education and Training Network Centres, the first one in Asia. The SHTM grew to become one of the first academic institutions to attain the UNWTO’s TedQual Certification, a quality control system for tourism research, training, and education in April 2001. The SHTM is also currently one of the members of the UNWTO Knowledge Network.

The International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST) opted the SHTM as the residence of its permanent secretariat in 2002. The academy works towards developing the scientific knowledge of tourism by improving both practical and theoretical research.

In 2003, the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators (ISTTE) awarded The School the ISTTE Institutional Achievement Award for the contribution it made to tourism education.

2005 saw the SHTM being ranked 4th globally and 1st in Asia, according to a study published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. The School also ranked 2nd globally among the hotel and tourism schools in 2009 for its scholarship and research, according to another study issued in the same journal.

In 2011, UNWTO Ulysses Prize, a top honour that is equivalent to a "Nobel Prize in Tourism" was given to the SHTM Dean, Chair Professor and Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management, Professor Kaye Chon.

In 2012, the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) granted Hotel ICON the McCool Breakthrough Award in recognition of its ground-breaking teaching and research.

The SHTM ranked number one globally in the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category, according to ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019.



The School features world-class teaching as well as research facilities, including:

  • The Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Research Centre, through which students can access an extensive range of teaching and reference materials in hotel and tourism management.
  • Bistro 1979 is a multi-function, student-run food and beverage restaurant unit offering a “real-world” restaurant environment for The School’s students to experiment, experience, learn and nurture the skill sets needed in the food and beverage industry.
  • Vinoteca Lab serves as an important facility to improve the food and beverage education for students. It also prepares The School’s students to meet the demands of Hong Kong as a hub of wine.
  • The Samsung Digital Lab for Hospitality Technology is a purpose-built facility for students to both learn and practice with the most recent devices and technology programmes in use within the hospitality and tourism industry.

Hotel ICON

Being completely owned by PolyU and as SHTM’s extension, Hotel ICON is the world’s first-ever research and teaching hotel of its kind. Although other universities have teaching hotels, Hotel ICON is unique. It is a hotel that fully incorporates teaching, research and learning in a completely service-oriented environment.

Situated in a building complex that also accommodates the SHTM campus, classrooms, research facilities, resource centres and lots more, Hotel ICON consists of three exceptional restaurants and guest rooms. The hotel is a testament to Hong Kong’s design innovation and creative energy. Hotel ICON provides dynamic and interactive learning environments, and modern educational facilities.

In order to fully incorporate Hotel ICON into The School’s curriculum, there has been a revamping of several subjects by the SHTM, involving the daily hotel operations, financial administration, event management, service quality and entrepreneurship management, all of which consists of practical training.




The School of Hotel and Tourism Management offers a number of awards and scholarships to deserving students who display a high level of merit in academics, demonstrate their involvement in relevant activities outside of the classroom, and actively participate in charitable and community activities.

Since The School of Hotel and Tourism Management was established, the whole of the industry of hospitality and tourism, as well as individual donors in Hong Kong, the region and overseas, have contributed a huge number of scholarships in order to encourage personal and academic excellence amongst its students.
