Overview

Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) is a private higher education institution in Malaysia. Based in the peaceful, beautiful city of Johor Bahru, AMU gives students a great learning experience and a strong connection to nature and city life. The university’s reputation is strong, and its future is bright. Students from all over the world can become a part of that bright future if they decide to enrol.

AMU specialises in health sciences, nursing and business studies and offers courses and programmes at the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students learn a winning mixture of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, becoming highly employable and prepared for a successful professional career in healthcare or business after graduation.

AMU academics and departments have won several awards in the last 20 years, with tutors and lecturers recognised for their amazing contributions to the field of education (and to research that’s been improving society).

The university aims to treat all students fairly and equally. Applicants are welcomed and accepted from across the world. To make learning accessible to as many students as possible, the language of teaching at this Malaysian institution is not Malay but English. Entry requirements are reasonable, access routes are available, and students can always receive help from AMU if they’re confused about any part of the application process.

In partnership with the government of Malaysia, AMU also offers lots of great scholarships to domestic and international students. Especially students from economically underprivileged countries who are aiming to develop their skills and take their knowledge back to their home countries to make community improvements.

There are also lots of great career and employment services at AMU, improving graduate outcomes and making sure every student can feel prepared by the time their graduation day arrives. The Employment Placement Unit is a full department dedicated to organising career fairs, workshops and special work experience/internship/placement programmes.

To enjoy nature-connected student life in Johor Bahru and a long list of fun, exciting student societies (as well as a high-quality learning experience that’s interactive and professionally focused), it has to be AMU.

Teaching Quality

AMU has a great reputation among Malaysian higher education providers. It’s one of the top 350 universities in the world according to Webometrics, with an excellence rank of 7,216. Teaching quality is a big reason for AMU’s impressive ranking, as tutors have a strong positive impact on students, and students rate their tutors highly whenever they’re given the opportunity.

AMU’s vision is education equality. The university wants all students to have access to a great education and quality teaching, including anyone from a poorer economic background. The university also wants to give its students important professional skills, not just equipping them for academic success but allowing them to continue to succeed in the professional world after they graduate from AMU.

Whatever level they’re studying at, students get a lot of academic support. They are offered expert knowledge from experienced lecturers, as well as practical, interactive learning opportunities. Students are taught in a way that always matches up with AMU’s ‘E’ goals (these are goals that the faculty are always reaching for and making the priority, and they’re a great way to make sure student needs keep coming first):

  • Educational excellence
  • An enriching student experience
  • Excellence in research
  • Excellence in organisation
  • Established and created alternate revenue

Popular subjects to study at AMU include nursing, biomedical sciences and information technology. The university has won many national awards thanks to its high-quality teaching and impressive research efforts. These include the Prime Minister’s CSR Award, The Excellence in Corporate Responsibility Award from the Ministry of Education, and the Gold Award for Employer of Choice.

Entry Requirements

All international students at AMU have to meet certain university entry requirements. Some of these will change from course to course and study level to study level, so all students should check the specific entry requirements for their course of choice before applying. These details can be found on the relevant course pages of the AMU website.

There aren’t many general university requirements beyond English language ability to the right standard and education to the right level. The university lists Malaysian qualifications but recognises a number of international equivalents. For example, an international student applying for a nursing bachelor’s degree needs to have achieved the educational equivalent of an STPM with a minimum CGPA of 2.5.

Postgraduates need a higher level of education, and previous university qualifications in relevant subjects to at least the level of a bachelor’s degree (2.5 minimum CGPA, again) will usually be accepted. Postgraduate applicants might be able to gain entry with a CGPA lower than 2.5 if they have five years or more of work experience in a relevant area, but these decisions will be made on an individual basis.

English Score Required

To make AMU courses as accessible as possible to the widest number of students from across the world, the language of teaching at this institution is English. This means that all applicants need a certain level of English language understanding to be considered for admission. If a student can’t prove their proficiency in English in another way, they will need to take a language test.

AMU accepts the Malaysian University English Test (MUET), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). As with entry requirements, minimum English proficiency scores can change between courses and levels of study. As an example, here are the minimum scores that a student applying for an undergraduate degree in nursing would need to be considered:

  • A minimum overall IELTS band score of 5.5
  • A minimum TOEFL online score of 80
  • A minimum MUEL band of 3

Standards will often be a little bit higher for postgraduate courses. The general standard is an overall IELTS band score of 6 or the equivalent for other testing methods. Students should make sure to do their research into the English score relevant to their course before applying to AMU.

Admission

The admission process for AMU is simple, as the university wants to be as accessible as possible to students from different backgrounds. To begin the journey to student admission, potential applicants should look at the university’s courses and decide which they want to study. When they’ve done this and made sure they meet all the relevant entry requirements, they can then download the online application form and start filling it in.

International students must have a study visa to enjoy student life at AMU. They can only get one if they’re enrolled in full-time studies at the university, and these visas are usually valid for a year (so a new one must be ordered for the next academic year). All student visa processes are managed by the university’s International Office.

Student visas can take up to six weeks to be approved, so it is important that overseas students apply early. After applicants receive their letter of offer from AMU, pay an application fee and pay their first instalment of tuition, they can continue with their student visa application.

International student tuition fees range from RM 11,000 for one-year diploma courses up to RM 60,000 annually for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. There are supporting documents that all new international students must provide for university admission, including:

  • A passport-sized photo of them on a white background
  • A photocopy of all the pages of their valid passport on A4 (the passport should have at least 24 months left)
  • Their academic certificates and transcripts
  • Their EMGS health declaration form
  • English translations of any important documents that aren’t in English

Applicants will also need to cover a student pass/visa processing fee of RM 2,200. There are certain admission guidelines for students travelling from particular countries, so research is required. Students who apply to AMU less than three months before the deadline will be admitted on a case-by-case basis.

Scholarships & Funding

The university scholarships offered by AMU apply only to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Malaysia. That rules out international students, but there are other grants they can apply for. Plus, AMU has agreements with the Malaysian government and other providers of bursaries and scholarships. It aims to support any student in need with funding and fees, no matter what their background is.

Students can apply for the Malaysia Government Scholarship if they are studying for a master’s degree at a public or private university in Malaysia. The scholarship lasts for 12-24 months and covers tuition fees and living expenses for applicants with strong academic ability, a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6 and an upper second-class bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 3 at minimum.

The Malaysian International Scholarship is available to all international students planning to study a master’s or doctoral programme in Malaysia. It covers the cost of transport (air tickets), tuition fees, medical insurance and journal publication, and it comes with a monthly allowance and a thesis allowance. To be eligible, students will need a minimum GPA of 3.5 and a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5.

International students at AMU can also apply for student loans if there are no scholarships that apply to them (but only if they have a guarantor who can commit to paying their loans back if they can’t). Some of the main loan providers are the Kuok Foundation, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation and the Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (KOJADI).

University Structure

At the AMU campus in Johor Bahru, there are a wide number of courses. Every course provides students with a quality educational experience and employs a number of expert lecturers to deliver knowledge and skills. These courses are divided into a total of three faculties and five centres:

  • The Faculty of Health Sciences (containing two diploma options, three bachelor’s degree options and one master’s degree option)
  • The Faculty of Nursing (containing the nursing bachelor’s degree and the nursing diploma)
  • The Faculty of Business, Management and Information Technology (containing three diploma options and three bachelor’s degree options)
  • The Centre of Foundation, Languages and General Studies (containing three foundation courses)
  • The Centre for Postgraduate Programmes (containing three master’s degree options, one postgraduate certificate option and two doctoral degree options)
  • The Centre for Continuing Education and Training
  • The Centre for Research
  • The Centre for Academic, Industry and International Collaboration

Facilities

AMU has one campus located in Johor Bharu. Close to the Iskander economic zone, it’s a peaceful environment close to a city full of opportunity and extracurricular fun. The campus is 50,000 square feet in total, and it has many great learning and student life facilities, including research centres and laboratories and student recreation centres.

AMU makes sure that students have all the academic services and facilities they need. It also makes sure there are lots of activities and societies for students to make the most out of when they’re not studying. This is an institution that wants its students to be happy, social and successful, and AMU is fully in support of a good balance between studying and enjoying student life in Malaysia.

Every AMU faculty has its own lecture theatres and study rooms, designed to be comfortable, modern and collaborative. The library, a popular student activity centre for studying and research, is designed to make life as easy as possible for students and staff. Physical books can be borrowed, digital resources can be accessed, and reference and information services are easy to use.

The campus also has some well-equipped science laboratories for students and staff researchers to enjoy. Each of the laboratories and research facilities is designed to give students industry-standard professional skills that will lead them successfully into the world of work.

To give an example, students have access to ultrasound and x-ray equipment and can get used to these things before they graduate. AMU computer labs are also filled with some of the best equipment available, so students can work with modern operating systems and software suites on a range of multimedia projects.

International students can get all the guidance they need from the university’s International Office on campus. In terms of extracurriculars, there are many sports societies and clubs for students to join for leisure or competition. Plus, the university’s accommodation options are great for making new connections and friendships. These student life centres off campus encourage people to connect and socialise outside the classroom.

Accommodation

International students at all levels of study can find university accommodation in the hostel that AMU provides. AMU student accommodation is comfortable and social but also great for private study. The hostel offers students private apartments along with some great shared facilities, including a tennis court, a swimming pool, 24-hour laundry services, a café, a gym and lots of modern kitchen amenities.

Johor Bahru’s main shopping area is close to the hostel. There, students will be able to buy everything they need for their studies and student lives. The hostel is also not far from the main AMU campus, and there are good transport links to all the things that a student could need.

On-campus accommodation is the best choice for students who want to join in fully with student life at AMU, but there are private accommodation options available too. These might be ideal for students who want more privacy or have a family. Apartments are available fully furnished, and the cost of renting a student house in the city is cheaper in this area than it is in other parts of Malaysia (usually around RM 728 monthly, not including bills and living costs).

Student Support

AMU offers some of the best student services in Malaysia. The institution understands that student welfare is important and that students can only produce great work when they feel valued, and the student support options on offer make sure that people always have their voices heard on campus.

The Student Portal is the first place to go when seeking advice or guidance. It can help with accommodation and transport enquiries, as well as any academic issues. AMU also offers some valuable confidential counselling services. In private one-to-one sessions with a qualified student guide, concerns about everything from a student’s personal life to their academic life can be openly discussed. Student support programmes can then be created for the individual to do things like:

  • Reduce stress
  • Improve personal confidence
  • Increase self-motivation
  • Improve time management skills

Students can also receive group guidance if they would prefer. Disabled students can receive specialist support with any learning or accessibility needs. International students can be helped with everything from admission to settling into life in Malaysia. Overall, student support services are a big priority at AMU, and those who enrol will find that they’re always easy to access.

Graduate Outcomes

In terms of graduate outcomes and job prospects, AMU is quickly becoming one of the best universities in Malaysia. 80 to 90 per cent of AMU graduates find employment in Malaysia and Singapore after they leave the university, and over 100 Malaysian companies choose to employ students from AMU, knowing they are all hard-working and well prepared for professional life.

Students are trained in skills that will make them stand out. They’re given lots of opportunities to network with employers and attend career fairs. They’re offered appointments with a career guide in which they can explore their career options and find their path. Then, there’s the Employment Placement Unit (EPU).

The EPU’s employment services are extremely useful to domestic and international students, including career talks, interview tips, workshops and the well-respected Employment Preparatory Programme. The EPU links students to graduates who have started successful careers for advice and guidance, as well as with potential employers in Malaysia and across the world. The EPU also manages two job portals so that students can see the opportunities available as they finish their studies.

Most AMU graduates find work in their sector of study (most often the health services sector). With the health industry always needing new, high-quality support, the career services and skills available to students of all backgrounds at AMU can allow them to offer this support, helping others and finding the right role for their skills and interests.
