Adapt. New comers will need at least 3-6 months to completely feels at home right here at UNIMAS. . The culture here is a bit different from Peninsular. Most Sarawakians are polite, nice and friendly. But if you are coming from KL or JB, or any fast pace big cities, you'll definitely need some time to adjust to the Sarawakians SLOW2 Pace. Gradually, U'll enjoy iT! The shops at Kota Samarahan closed at 7.30-8 pm though, except Kuching. The day gets bright around 6.20 am and dark around 7pm. Transportation here is easy to get as we have students offering car rentals, our own UNIMAS shuttle bus on campus and out campus, and we even have a SUMMER MALL 10mins walk from the campus. Oh yeah, U'll definitely be HEALTHY here, as u'll be trained to walk long miles (adapted through walking from hostel to classes n etc) and the AIR here is SUPERB, TOTALLY FRESH! We have a big, hotel looking library known as CAIS. LOts of books, and I personally did not felt the need to buy any books, just lend it~everything is there and Dr. GOOGLE of coz. Free wifi at own FACULTY, LABS, CAIS and PAVILION. PAVILION is one of UNIMAS food court beside LAKEview. Both offers Affordable TAsty Food. Out of campus, you'll get TASTY laksa, KOLO mee n Teh C special at the SAY CAFE, UNI GARDEN. So, food no prob, as long as u aren't too picky. Well, cook yourself if u r. ATM machine is right at PAVILION. For leisure, u can either rent a car and travels 20-30 mins to KUCHING for Karaoke OR just participate in KAYAK at our BIG lake, dip at UNIMAS swimming pool or rent out bikes (FREE) at the GYM. Basketball, badminton court...u named it, and u'll find it chuck somewhere in the campus. PLus a BOWLING n SNOOKER CEnter. For newcomers, do bring a PAIR of SPORT SHOE. Its a nice experience to walk all over the CAMPUS b4 the class starts, plus it'll prevent u getting lost (UNIMAS IS A VERY VERY BIG CAMPUS WITH BIG LAKE). The shuttle bus do get cramped like sardines during PEAK HOURS. ZOOLOGY is an extremely FUN course to study. A mixture of nature with laboratory works (optional in your final year project, FYP). and YES. ITS RESEARCH BASED (FYP). Students are required to go field sampling to collect samples, either fecal, or live specimens. U'll get in contact with animals (bats, rodents, primates, fish, insects etc). The courses are taught in ENGLISH (90%). We have a complete functioning molecular labs (very good for an IPTA), capable to caters standard and gradient PCR etc. Lecturers of Zoology Department are easy going and friendly and u'll have no problem understanding if you are OK with ENGLISH. Lectures are fun at times, bit lullaby at others (depends on who is teaching and ur interest). In short, NATURE, ANIMAL LOVERS n etc are definitely WELCOME! if u aren't, u'll get by with some effort. 1st semester students PLS DO NOT SLEEP DURING LECTURE. The lecturers won't even reprimand you, and that is dangerous to your EXAM result (not bcoz the lecturer minus marks for ur behaviours of coz). Being a ZOOLOGisT, graduates mostly work with Gov such as SFC, PERHILITAN etc, researcher + lecturers mostly focusing on conservation management. For some, they may venture to a much more applicable field such as pest management, captive breeding etc. Of coz, there's zoos too. The above mentioned position are for those who wish to continue as a ZOOLOGIST etc. Alternatively, being a UNIVERSITY Graduate, You can just reformat your brain and START YOur own Business RIGHT after you graduated. LOTS of OPTIONs. Hence, WELCOME TO UNIMAS!! Its not a JUNGLE NO MORE! But we do have patches of forest in our campus >O<. Nature ha! show less
