WelTec is among New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions and the second-oldest in Wellington. The institute has transformed over the years, but has always focused on teaching real skills. Weltec started off as the Petone Technical School in 1904, teaching evening classes in rented accommodation. Over the years there were various shifts in name, sites and structure, with the institute being named Petone Technical College, Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Petone Technical Institute and Hutt Valley Polytechnic. WelTec is part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Te Pūkenga). Te Pūkenga brings the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and the training activities of certain Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) together to create a national network. This gives learners more choices and flexibility in what, where and how they learn.
