Overview

Raffles was set up in 1990 and has grown a lot over the last 32 years. Now, it has 18 colleges and universities in 16 cities across 10 countries. The RU website makes it easy for students to find out what they need to study here, which makes the application process simple and easy for international students.

There are five values that are at the heart of RU’s education: social responsibility, professional excellence, analytical thinking, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Students can learn in an international environment, helping them expand their network and learn about new cultures.

Raffles University (RU) offers programmes at lots of different levels, including foundation, diploma, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD.

Raffles University has a range of scholarship opportunities for local and international applicants. There are eight different scholarships available, from Merit Scholarship to the Outstanding International Student Scholarship.

There are five faculties within the university: ai and robotics, arts and design, built environment and regenerative design, business and social science.

Raffles Education Consultants offer advice to students to help them make important decisions about their future. Raffles Student Association represents students and has direct access to the school’s management. RSA hosts and supervises student activities and regularly organises public events.

Graduates from Raffles find it easy to get a job. 98 per cent are in work and 12 per cent work for themselves, having set up their own business after they graduated. All graduates are part of the friendly RU Alumni network, where they can find new opportunities and keep in touch with friends for as long as they like.

Teaching quality

Raffles delivers quality, personalised design, and business education to its students. It has five key areas that back up its approach to teaching. They are personalised learning, students’ industry-ready, practised-based programmes, analytical thinking and creative and innovative skills.

Small class sizes allow the lecturers to spend more time with all students and give them the help they need. RU has a low staff-to-student ratio of 1:11, so students get time to ask plenty of questions. To make sure students find it easier to get a job when they graduate, RU has links with over 30 industrial partners. This also helps the university keep its programmes as relevant as possible.

Students also take part in industry and community projects during their studies. They can apply for internships which help them to develop practical skills during their time with a company.

Studying at Raffles helps many students get closer to their goal of owning a business. Over the years, Raffles has worked with many graduates who have had great careers as entrepreneurs after their studies.

Raffles has won several teaching awards including:

  • International Star Award for Quality (Gold Category) 2014
  • International Diamond Prize Award Excellence in Quality 2015
  • ESQR’s Quality Choice Prize Success Quality Management 2016
  • Excellence of the Year for Leadership in Education in Asia 2016
  • International Quality Crown Award 2018

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for the RU vary depending on the course an applicant wants to study. The university makes it simple for anyone wanting to apply to find out exactly what they’ll need for admission.

For a diploma course, which helps students move towards a bachelor's degree, they will need to have three secondary school qualifications – for example O-levels or GCSEs. Some diplomas may need students to have particular subjects.

For bachelor’s degrees, students will need to have passed a diploma, or have passed a qualification like A levels. Again, some degrees ask that students have a qualification in a certain subject. For master’s degrees and above, students must show they’ve finished a bachelor’s degree and achieved a certain grade.

Here is an example of the international qualifications students need to be accepted onto an undergraduate degree-level course.

  • STPM: Grade C+ (CGPA 2.33) in 2 subjects and Pass Maths and English subjects at SPM level.
  • A level: Full pass in 2 subjects and Pass Maths and English subjects at A Level or equivalent.
  • UEC: Grade B in 5 subjects and Pass in Maths and English.
  • Matriculation/Foundation/Asasi: CGPA 2.00.
  • Diploma (MQF level 4)/ Advanced Diploma (MQF level 5): Pass.
  • STAM: Jayyid grades and Pass in Maths and English at SPM level.

International students also need to understand English to a certain level. They need to have passed one of the following tests:

  • TOEFL: 550
  • TOEFL iBT: 46
  • PTE: 51
  • MUET: Band 4
  • Cambridge English/ Linguaskill: 160

If a student doesn’t meet International Student English Requirements, they will have to take an English Preparation Programme (EPP) and TOEFL, or any equivalent English qualification.

Admission

Raffles has an online application form, which makes it easy for students to apply. For international students, there are three intakes per year and the deadline for application varies for each. Once they have been offered a place, students will also need to get a visa. It can take up to six weeks for the visa process to finish, so students should apply with plenty of time.

The average tuition fee for an undergraduate course per year is RM 28,630. Practical courses cost an average of RM 24,890.

Scholarships & funding

University structure

Raffles University has five departments, or faculties. It has been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia (MOHE) to teach programmes in:

  • AI & Robotics
  • Arts & Design
  • Business
  • Built Environment and Regenerative Design
  • Social Sciences

Raffles has great teachers and plenty of them, so every student gets a learning experience that sets them up for a brilliant career. There are courses at three levels – diploma, undergraduate and graduate. This means international students at any level can learn more about the field they’re interested in right here. Raffles’ goal is to support students’ creativity and innovation. It wants to help them grow their talent and start a career they love.

Raffles uses a ‘blended learning’ method. It was launched in 2020, when the pandemic meant lessons had to be taught online. Now, all lessons are taught online and in-person at the same time so all students can be at every session. It also uses a learning management system (LMS), where students can read useful documents and complete tests.

Facilities

Raffles University city campus is located at Kotaraya Building, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The campus has lots of useful facilities. These include classrooms, a student lounge and a library, where students can study, relax and chat with friends. There are also practical spaces like sewing rooms and studios that allow students to work on projects or hobbies.

Located in the heart of the city, the campus is close to useful facilities. City Square and JBCC Komtar malls are only 15 minutes’ walk from campus and have lots of shops to visit. Raffles is also close to banks, ATMs, cafes, hospitals and even places to worship. RU is near Larkin Bus Terminal and JB Sentral. From here, students can travel to places like Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and Singapore.

In the future, Raffles University will build a modern campus in Iskandar Malaysia’s EduCity. There will be undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught here in a place with the latest facilities. The campus will be located in the centre of a business hub that makes it easy for students to get work experience and internships.

Accommodation

Raffles doesn’t have student accommodation on site. There are two places to stay near the campus though, which are safe and convenient. Damai Residence next to the college, so it’s great for students who want to be close to classes.

CoLiv is a community-focused place. There are lots of common spaces and resources, as well as private rooms. CoLiv offers six types of rooms for single people and couples, which all have furniture. Some have their own private bathrooms too. If a student is under 18, they’ll need a parent or guardian to sign for their room.

In EduCity village, there are lots of facilities like a games area, basketball court, vending machines, an outdoor gym and places to cook meals.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout the university buildings and accommodation. The accommodation is also close to cafes, restaurants, parks, food shops and shopping outlets, which means students will have lots of food, study and leisure options.

Student support

The Learning Support Centre (LSC) helps students who need extra help with their studies. Students can meet an adviser alone or bring a group of friends along to work on study skills.

Raffles Education looks after the Raffles Education Network (REN), which has offices across the Asia Pacific region. They support new students who want to study at any Raffles site in Asia and Europe.

Trained Raffles Education consultants are always around to offer advice to new students to help them work out what they’d like to study, based on their goals and interests. They can take new students on personalised guided tours.

Raffles Student Association is the official student association of Raffles University. RSA hosts and supervises student activities and regularly organises public events. All students should take part in RSA activities and take the opportunity to improve their leadership and social skills beyond the classroom.
