Teaching quality

SIM was started in 1964 with the mission of training people to help with Singapore’s economic growth. SIM has partnered with universities across the world and companies in lots of industries to develop its academic programmes, professional courses, training solutions and work opportunities.

 

Over the years, SIM has won lots of awards and gained many accreditations. It was voted as one of the top 3 private education centres in Asia and is registered under the Committee for Private Education’s (CPE) Enhanced Registration Framework (ERF).

 

SIM delivers courses in education, management development and professional learning. The programmes and services help international students to succeed in the competitive and demanding world of work.

 

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for SIM courses vary depending on what each student would like to study. The university makes it easy for anyone wanting to apply to find out what they’ll need for admission. Generally, for degree and diploma courses, students will need to have finished 12 years of education. They should have, or be working towards, an international qualification such as A Levels.

 

English Score Required

International students applying for SIM admissions need to show they understand English to a high level. They must have scored a certain grade in one of the following tests:

 

  • IELTS – 5.5
  • TOEFL PBT – 580
  • TOEFL iBT – 59
  • PTE – 42
  • SIM English test – Advanced 1 level

 

Admission

Students need to apply to SIM online through SIMConnect and the application process is quite simple. Once they have all the documents SIM needs, they can upload them. This will include proof of qualifications and a copy of their passport. Some courses are run by other universities at SIM’s site, so students may need to share more information, like a CV or reference letter.

 

International students have to pay a SGD 481.50 application fee. Once they have been accepted onto a course, they will also need to apply for a visa, called a Student’s Pass (STP). The average tuition fee per year for undergraduate courses is SGD 13,780, while the average tuition fee per year for postgraduate courses is SGD 22,610.

 

If students are interested in one of SIM’s professional development courses, they need to register with SIM Academy.

 

Scholarships & funding

SIM offers bursaries and financial aid to its students. It has a few commercial partners and is always looking for others to help it offer more student support.

 

SIM Global Education Bursary and the SIM GE Crisis Fund help students with money worries. They can get up to SGD 6,000 or SGD 5,000 for one year of study. This bursary is open to full-time or part-time SIM GE students on Foundation, Diploma, Undergraduate or Postgraduate programmes.

 

There are also other financial support packages that are offered by private companies or trusts. These include the Association of Muslim Professionals Education Bursary and the Sivadas-HEB Education Fund.

 

There are also scholarships that local and international students can apply for. The SIM Global Education Undergraduate Scholarship is for students on bachelor’s degree programmes. It is given to students with great results, or achievements in sports and arts. The award is SGD 15,000 per person, given in two payments. The SIM Global Education Diploma Scholarship covers the course fees for international students who are great communicators and get brilliant results.

 

There is also the SAFRA-SIM Global Education Sponsorship, which covers up to ten students every year. It’s open to new students taking full-time SIM diploma programmes (who get 50 per cent of their fees covered) and part-time University of London (UOL) undergraduate degree programmes (who get their SIM course fees covered).

 

University structure

SIM is a leading private education institution in Singapore. It has partnered with universities around the world to offer a range of courses. These include education centres in Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

 

SIM offers over 120 full-time and part-time academic programmes. There are people from over 40 different countries here, so students get to learn about lots of different cultures and traditions. They leave with a new, global mindset and the knowledge they need to start a brilliant career.

 

In their free time, students can join more than 70 clubs. They can develop their interests in arts, culture and sports. These activities also help students get better at leadership, communication and form a new professional network.  

 

SIM provides support to all students, from financial help to counselling services. All students are also covered by medical insurance in Singapore and overseas. 

 

Facilities

SIM’s main campus is large, at around 110,000 sqm, and has lots of facilities. It has four buildings where students learn, study and relax. Block A is where the university’s lecture theatres are, which can seat between 20 and 498 students. There are also four computer labs here, where lessons are taught.

 

Block B and SIM Management House have a mixture of lecture spaces, classrooms and computer labs. Blocks C and D have classrooms and computer labs. Each building also has courtyards and spaces where students can sit, chat and study. Students can rent a locker on campus to keep their things safe.

 

Outside the main teaching and study areas, students will find a large library, financial training centre, a sports hall and a wellness centre. There is also a theatre which can seat 400, where students perform, sing and play instruments. There are more than 80 student clubs, where students can make new friends and take part in everything from salsa dancing to debate club to sports.

 

Accommodation

SIM does not offer university accommodation, but there are lots of places to live in the area. The ISO (International Students Organisation) helps new international students settle in and can help them find a place to stay in Singapore. They can recommend popular hostels and accommodation agencies that will help students find a place that fits their budget and needs.

 

There are serviced apartments in the area, like LYF Funan. It’s 40 minutes from campus by bus and not far from City Hall train station. There are social and study spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and a gym. Students will be part of a diverse community, get to know the local culture and make new friends through LYF’s weekly social events.

 

Singapore’s public transport system is fast, convenient and efficient. It generally operates from 5.30am to midnight. There are several options for taxis and private hire cars in Singapore, such as ComfortDelGro, Gojek, Grab, and Tada. No matter where students choose to live, they will find it easy to get to class.

 

Student support

There is lots of student support at SIM. The Student Learning Centre has its own Learning Development team, who help students find better ways to study, present and write. There are lots of free resources, including those to help with academic writing, critical thinking, presentation and getting better at studying. 

 

The Peer-Assisted-Learning Programme (PAL) is a way for students to help each other. Senior, trained students host weekly sessions, where they share tips and study skills to help students improve. PAL also helps students make new friends and practice for exams, making the whole process easier for everyone.

 

The Student Care team helps students stay well and deal with worries and stress. They help students book an appointment with the counselling service and access support from other students through the peer mentor scheme. Student Care also look after the library of wellness resources SIM offers. These help students stay well and healthy throughout their studies.

 

There is also a Career Services team. They help students with career workshops, pretend interviews, CV reviews and more. The team also hold talks, networking events and career fairs and can help students find internships and jobs for after they graduate.

 

Graduate outcomes

SIM stays in touch with its students and offers them support and opportunities that will help them get ahead. SIM graduates have great careers, with 83.8 per cent in work.
