Singapore Management University (SMU) is a young institution at the forefront of business education in Singapore and Asia.
Founded in 2000 and modelled on the renowned Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, SMU fills a unique place in the Singapore education landscape as a specialised and leading provider of business-based education.
The university is made up of six schools covering the areas of accountancy, business, economics, information systems, law and social sciences. Each boasts academic and industry experts amongst the faculty to provide over 9,000 postgraduate and undergraduate students from around the world with a top-class learning experience.
SMU aims to produce articulate graduates who are comfortable with critical thinking and leadership, using cutting-edge research combined with business knowledge to educate students. SMU is recognised as a world-class research institution with distinguished teaching, addressing Asian issues of a global relevance with awareness of its environment.

Despite being in existence for less than two decades, SMU was awarded five-star ratings for Overall Excellence, Employability, Facilities, Inclusiveness, Internationalisation and Specialisation in Social Sciences and Management by the QS Stars Asian University Rankings in 2016.
It was also the youngest institution to be accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2011, with the Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) and School of Accountancy (SOA) earning re-accreditation in 2016. Only 2% of universities in Southeast Asia offering business degrees have achieved this accreditation.
SMU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) climbed 7 spots and is now placed 6th among top business schools in Asia Pacific, according to 2018 Financial Times (FT) rankings. The rankings are concluded by evaluating the quality of the postgraduate programmes offered by the business schools. LKCSB’s MBA programme is ranked 30th worldwide and first in Singapore by FT’s Top MBAs for Finance Rankings 2018.
SMU broadened its relationship with many new and existing Chinese partner universities including Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and Fudan University across subjects including business management and law. Reinforcement of its partnerships has given rise to new projects in the pipeline such as summer programme for members of University Consortium of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (UCMSR) and joint research seminars on ageing economics.
All faculty members of Singapore Management University are experts selected from top universities. In order to inculcate practical knowledge in students along with theoretical knowledge, the university specifically selects research and practical track professors who educate students about applying theoretical knowledge. Reflecting its emphasis on ‘real-life’ learning, SMU invites many industrial leaders to share their industrial expertise with students.
SMU puts in special effort to maintain first class quality of postgraduate education by presenting the Teaching Excellence in Postgraduate Programmes Award to faculty members who showcase exemplary quality of teaching skills, updated knowledge and student engagement. Besides classroom teaching, postgraduate education in SMU involves several interactive workshops as a part of the Postgraduate Professional Development Series (PDS). The workshops are conducted by SMU’s faculty members as well as external professionals and develop employable skills in students like communication, negotiation and leadership.
SMU offers several postgraduate programmes in its six schools of: Accountancy, Business, Law, Information Systems, Economics and Social Sciences.
School of Accountancy: The school develops in students, financial decision making, risk management, managerial skills. It offers postgraduate programmes like Master of Professional Accounting, MSc in CFO Leadership, MSc in Accounting (Data and Analytics) and other research programmes.
Lee Kong Chian School of Business: The school provides students holistic education that includes global exposure, industrial networking and specialisation. Few of the popular postgraduate programmes offered include Master of Business Administration (MBA), MSc in Quantitative Finance, MSc in Wealth Management (which was ranked 3rd worldwide and 1st in Asia by Financial Times 2018) and research programmes (ranked 3rd in Asia by UT Research rankings 2018).
School of Economics: The School of Economics is among the top 10 economic schools worldwide, providing students with deep insights into the subject, with the help of global faculty members. MSc in Economics, MSc in Financial Economics and PhD in Economics are the postgraduate programmes offered by the school.
School of Information Systems: The school emphasises on innovation, research and IT solutions. The school offers several postgraduate programmes that include a Master of IT in Business, MSc in Computing, MPhil in Information Systems and PhD programmes.
School of Law: The School of Law trains students to become intellectual lawyers in the field of business, economics and politics at international levels. It offers postgraduate programmes like Master of Laws, Juris Doctor and research programmes.
School of Social Sciences SMU’s School of Social Sciences is one of the first in Singapore to offer multi-disciplinary social sciences programme. Fast-Track MPhil (2 years) and PhD in Psychology are the postgraduate programmes offered here.
SMU looks for students with leadership and intellectual qualities for its postgraduate programmes. Besides the programme-specific admission conditions, there are other requirements to determine the academic and personal aptitude of students. On the academic front, the applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a reputed institution, a good GRE or GMAT score and a good TOEFL/IELTS score (if the under graduation was not in English).
On a personal front, the applicants are required to hold a resume with academic and professional achievements, two reference reports and an interview session with SMU admission officers.
SMU offers the SMU Masters-ASEAN Scholarship for postgraduate students hailing from ASEAN member countries. The recipient of the scholarship must have enrolled for a postgraduate professional programme at SMU, commendable academic record and not be a recipient of other SMU scholarships.
SMU boasts enormous halls like the Mochtar Riady Auditorium that’s equipped with modern facilities and the SMU hall which can seat up to 800 students at once. Its state-of-the-art classrooms and seminar rooms enrich the student learning experience.
Outside classrooms, SMU provides numerous facilities such as a sports hall, arts and culture centre, gym and a running track. The gym is new and has three floors – one for cardio, one for weights and circuits and basement floor for dance fitness. The sports hall is a multipurpose facility where students can play basketball, badminton, volleyball, practice martial arts, archery – among others. The hall also features an 11-metre high wall for rock-climbing. At level 6 of the administration building is the swimming pool, which comes with a sauna and shower/locker rooms.
SMU also features the Basement Studio, whose soundproofed walls make it a perfect place to rehearse music, produce music and hold jamming sessions.
SMU takes special interest in enhancing the employability of its postgraduate students through its postgraduate career services centre. The university hosts over 100 career development programmes and recruitment talks. It also organises Career Fairs with participation of over 250 employers.
Students at SMU benefit from various initiatives including partnering with employers and connecting with the alumni. MBA students of SMU are 100% assured of internship. This provides them an ideal platform to gain field/industry experience, helping them build their networks.
Students of the university are also each assigned a specific career coach to assist in mapping their career. The coaches constantly connect with the network of employers to expand the career options of students. This is implemented by organising recruitment talks, where employers share their work experience and talk about the companies’ recruitment processes and corporate cultures.
In SMU, 90% of Master of Professional Accounting students were recruited within 3 months of graduation in 2018. The career services team also brings industrial professionals to interact with postgraduate students. In these sessions, students gain deep insights into their industries of interest.
