My experience in the Mechanical Engineering Technology-Industrial program (Fast-track).

The Mechanical Engineering Technology-Industrial program (Fast-track) is a program that apart from having various mechanical concepts such as the design and part machining gives you the opportunity to have the hands-on experience with machinery such as the milling machine, lathe and multi-axis milling machine HAAS, which in my case adding the experience I had in my country will improve my chances to apply for job positions related to the process in a production floor or manufacturing companies.

Another point to highlight is that my program is a Fast-track or accelerated program which considers the career I had already done back in my country exempting me from the first two semesters of the normal program allowing me to complete a three years degree program in just two years.

Experience Centennial :)

I am pursing my post-graduate diploma in computer systems-networking program. I am into my last semester and I feel centennial college really prepared to be confident in my IT skills. It really doesn't matter at which level you are starting as college prepare you from the basics and then keep on changing gear with each semester. Another good thing about Centennial is the Co-op program. College help you with finding coop and polish your resume which was realy helpful for me in getting 8 months co-op in datacentre in toronto. I was able to pay my tution fee myself beacause of this work opportunity only.

What makes Centennial College special

Centennial College according to me is one of a kind. I have spent my Canadian life studying/working here. It has a lot of components that make it special. To begin with, teachers are extremely helpful and provide full support to students in explaining the topics. Additionally, they are approachable outside of classroom (or after class hours) and also try to understand individual student’s needs.
Student life wise I felt completely at home with the kind of reception I received from the International Department. Global Citizenship and Equity office provides a range of programs which allows students to have an international footprint and experience. I got an opportunity to travel to southern France for French language and cultural exchange (which was my lifelong dream. And living in La Rochelle, France, soaking in culture and talking to people in French significantly improved my confidence when it comes to spoken French and encouraged me to continue my French studies after coming back to Centennial College. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities to enhance your leadership qualities. In fact, Centennial College has its own leadership program called Leadership Passport which allows student to complete certain competencies and graduate with a distinction in leadership! If I have an option I would definitely recommend and encourage anybody to come to Centennial College and live the experience.

About me

Best that I learned from the Centennial College is Teamwork. In software development you can’t go so far alone – especially in the beginning of you journey. Teaming up helped me so much in every way. It makes you more productive and creative if you use it right. College and people around me motivate me to do something new every time. I just recently closed the start-up company that we started with my friend who use to study Business in Centennial College. I don’t think it is bad that we closed it. I just look at it as an experience as well. Company name was CheckJack Inc. and it supposed to be a crowdfunding web platform for artists with any hobbies. We did a lot of work by ourselves and now it all transformed in to skills.

First I will recommend to go on all the competitions and Hackathon that will happen in near future. That is where you start and meet new people with the same interests.

Competitions shows you and teaches you how to solve problems. Sometimes you cannot know how to solve it but when you in competition you will not believe yourself that you can actually do it. Competitions is also a good networking place. Sometime you can end up talking to people that you will never reach on their everyday schedule. So I again recommend competitions – it is always a new opportunity.

My overall experience

I am an international student from USA studying the The Developmental Services Program (DSW) at Centennial College. The program offers the foundation of supporting individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities. This program requires you to problem solve, plan, analyze, work and influence a positive change in people and within the community and requires great communication and team work. You will learn or strengthen the ability to changing and improving the life of others by supporting, advocating, and helping society create a positive understanding of the individuals you support. Not only does the program do theoretical learning, but also involves practical learning. One special assignment in particular was designing a Person Centered plan (PCP), for a real person with a disability. PCP is a constructive plan and basis to helping individuals express their choice, achieve their goals and purpose. This allows you reach out and connect to an actual person with a disability, and help put together ideas and plans to better their future and their role in society as a person. This was a challenge to see how creative and resourceful I can be on someone else’s behalf.
As an International student I recommend numerous services for students to take advantage of such as academic advising, academic and peer tutoring, leadership passport, and fitness center. It’s always good get to know your academic advisor and coordinator of the program to keep on track and updated on your progress during your studies. As a peer tutor I have experienced in the past that students find it less intense to get help with their program from a fellow peer. Leadership passport brings out the leader in you and gives you varies opportunities to demonstrate leadership which you can proudly display as an accomplishment when you graduate Centennial. Also keep your body in good shape and health by using the facilities such as the gym conveniently on campus without any additional fees
