Attractive return on investment

While SDSM&T may not have the renown that some of the bigger US universities have, it focuses on a few things and does them well, for a fraction of the cost. The rigorous academic and professional development programs put the best companies within your reach. And while the computer science program admittedly has a smaller range of electives than you could find at another university, SDSM&T makes up for it with its low student to faculty ratio. This gives you easy access to the professors, who really care about their students' career development.
A highlight at SDSM&T are the numerous student organizations. There are organizations for a host of diverse interests from professional societies to the ski & snowboard club, which means that there's always something you can get involved in.

Don't give a second thought about School of mines

If you want to invest less and gain more out of it, then School of mines is the best school. Most of the graduate student get scholarship/assistantship which is hard to achieve in other USA universities.

SDSMT provides all the resources for you to excel inside and outside the classroom

SDSMT has a wonderful education that is catered to develop a well-rounded engineer. There are countless opportunities for students to participate in events, develop leadership skills and gain mentoring for classes etc.
SDSMT allows any student (that is willing) to pursue countless in class and extra curricular activities- furthering enhancing their experience and thus graduating as a well prepared engineer.
My main advice: EVERYTHING you need to do well is there for any student, all you have to do is seek it out and apply yourself accordingly. This school has provided me with many positive and tremendous opportunities that I will forever be grateful for.

SDSMT

I am doing my PhD at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). I finished my bachelors and masters in India. Being an international student it is always a big challenge academically, culturally and emotionally to start in a foreign country. I am glad that i got admitted to SDSMT for my graduate studies. The quality of research being carried here is amazing. Lot of opportunities are available to work in collaboration with different departments, universities and industries. Being a microbiologist, starting an engineering program was a big challenge for me. Thanks to the faculty whose one to one approach and ever ready nature to go an extra mile to help students has helped me excel in studies. The support of the staff and local community has helped me overcome my cultural and emotional fears which i had before leaving India. The friendship relations you make while studying here with students from different countries are life long. The student organizations at SDSMT have given me opportunities not only to excel in studies but to develop my overall personality. In short SDSMT is truly producing "Leaders for Future".

A real bang for the buck

I honestly think any academic institution will provide career and life experience opportunities. SDSM&T is just another one of those. The two things I hear in this school that are most resonant to me is that: 1) it is incredibly affordable for international students, especially since your engineering degree is ABET-accedited, and 2) SDSM&T is surprisingly well known among employers.

One advice I should give to students interested in SDSM&T is that the opportunities are here, but you need to seize them. This goes for both your school life and your career. You can either waste your 4 years away, not accomplishing anything but your degree, or you could have a life experience unique to SDSM&T.

Goodluck!

Great School for internationals

SDSM&T is a great school, and from what I understand especially for undergraduate students. Quite limited funding opportunities for Graduate students seeking assistanships from the school. Luckily several faculty members have external funding for graduate students.
The school staff, including the Ivanhoe International Center have really great staff that will work their behinds off to help students with everything they need from pre-arrival stuff like visas to making sure you have coffee when you need it. Absolutely recommended

Best school year I've had

I was an exchange student at SDSM&T spring and fall 2014. Going to Mines have thought me a lot about myself, study habits and a year at Mines got me more interested in my field. I am impressed and presently surprised over how good they are academically. I knew after being at SDSM&T that i wanted to proceed in my field and take a graduate degree in the U.S. My choice fell (again) on Mines because of their good academic programs but I also wanted to go somewhere that was affordable for me. Mines has everything, and if you open you're eyes, Rapid City and the Black Hills area has a lot to offer when you (if you...) have some spare time!

Life change experience

Studying at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is, for sure, a life change experience. I was awarded with a scholarship from the Brazilian government and chosen to study in an American university. SDSMT couldn't be a better choice! Having the best help from its International Center, as an international student I had the best treatment I could ever have. The excellent practical classes in nice laboratories with professors and doctors that want to help you to learn gave me more will to enjoy my time at SDSMT. They have a program that makes you develop your professional, personal, leadership, cultural skills. International students and international community are very friendly and make you feel at home.

Awesome experience

One advice I would give to anyone considering SDSM&T is to be get ready for an excellent academic environment. Though small in size, the school offers great quality of education in the courses offered. Something interesting about SDSM&T is the good interaction between students and professors due to the student faculty ratio. As an international student, settling down was quite easy because the school has a good structure to help international students/scholars adapt to the new academic environment and meet with people from different part of the world.

Great school for research and future job!

I’m an international student from China. As the second year Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering program, I really love this school. It changed my life!

First of all, SDSM&T is a great school for research. It has excellent professors, advanced devices and equipment, and great research atmosphere. It provides various multidisciplinary programs, which attracts many creative and innovative students. Most of the graduate students could get the scholarship.

Second, culture diversity in this school is amazing! International students have constituted about 5-10 percent of the total student population. It also have faculty members from all over the world. The Ivanhoe International Center is the home for all international students. I really feel warm in this big family.

Third, the school provide a great opportunity for seeking a job. It offers an exceptional Return on Investment, which was featured in three top national media outlets. The university's placement rate is 98 percent, with an average early-career salary for graduates of $65,600. Every year, hundreds of companies will come to school to have the job fair. I feel confident to find a good job after my graduation.
