I am glad i took a wise decision..

You can tailor a fine arts degree to wherever your interests lie, but be prepared to be challenged! Studying fine art pushes you to understand how you as an artist fit into the world.

Everyone’s work and ideas are vastly different and inspiring. I’ve had the support at Whitecliffe to build the foundations for a sustainable art practice.

Whitecliffe lecturers have impressive artistic track records

There is a lot of creative freedom here. You really can pursue whatever you want, as long as you justify it – and the justification comes naturally if you work hard and enjoy it.

I can't say enough about the quality of the lecturers and studio advisors in Fine Arts. They have impressive artistic track records, and if you put the work in, they treat you as peers rather than students.

Whitecliffe gives me confidence

Having the freedom to explore my own ideas has led me to create new works that even a year ago I would never have imagined possible. Working to deadlines and receiving feedback, both positive and negative, is motivational.

Whitecliffe opens up many opportunities..

Whitecliffe immediately seemed very open and accepting. Whitecliffe opened up “the greater painting discourse” to me, giving me the language, methodologies and awareness to be part of contemporary painting in New Zealand and globally.

I've found myself producing work that I would never have thought I was capable of.

Whitecliffe gives you freedom to create without being confined..

Whitecliffe expanded and challenged the way I thought about making my art, while also being incredibly encouraging. My jewellery is starting to attract attention. It has been featured in publications such as Vogue and NZ Fashion Quarterly and occasionally requested by celebrity stylists.

One of the most important things I learned at Whitecliffe is that there is no right or wrong way to make your art. You just have to find your thing and keep on making.

I particularly enjoyed the process of making and experimenting

What I love about fine arts is that it is primarily about ideas. Learning across several creative areas at Whitecliffe provided the perfect opportunity to find that fit.

I learnt many things at Whitecliffe

People and art are what I love and I’m constantly trying to bring the two closer together in an interesting and meaningful way. I learned how to work out the value of an idea, how to question, test and strengthen it, and find the best way to convey it.

Whitecliffe has more structured fashion programme

I enjoy the challenge of taking my designs from flat sketches and developing them into wearable garments. At Whitecliffe we have close relationships with our tutors, rather than just being a name on a roll and I value our more structured fashion programme which enables us to develop our own concepts and ideas.

Having our own studio spaces in the fashion department at Whitecliffe is a huge advantage. I also wanted to look forward to and be excited by what I was doing each day. Working in a fast moving and creative industry would challenge me and fulfil my ambitions for the career I aspire to.

Whitecliffe has definitely made me a more solid designer

I love designing and making clothes, and at Whitecliffe we’re given the freedom to explore our ideas and develop our potential. The tutors are patient and lovely, and the great knowledge that they share on garment construction is my strongest reason for continuing on this journey.

Whitecliffe has definitely made me a more solid designer. I can say that I am more confident in what I design and construct. It’s exciting to know there is a promising future at the end of studying towards my degree

Whitecliffe has good industry ties

Whitecliffe is small and intimate, and when you commit to doing something to the best of your ability it’s reassuring to have more tutor time and be treated as an individual. I was sold on the level of hands-on time. We have a fashion show at the end of each year where we get to show our year’s collection and we all get amazing opportunities to work in the fashion industry with well-known designers.

I have been noticed through our end-of-year fashion shows, and have built strong relationships with important people in the fashion industry, whom I know will look after me when I start my own career
