    Most international students in New Zealand rate their experience positively

    A total of 84 per cent of international students in New Zealand say their experience of the country has been positive, according to a new government survey. The country's 2023 International Student Experience report also found that 83 per cent would recommend it as a study destination, and that 88 per cent felt positive about its people and the connections they made there. Almost 4,800 students completed the survey, representing more than 70 different nationalities.

    Next leaders of New Zealand pledge to 'revive international education'

    The party who are set to lead the government of New Zealand following the country's latest election have promised to improve its international education sector, with plans including changes to visa processing and employment rights. Under the policies outlined in the National Party's Reviving international education document, international students would be able to pay a fee for priority visa processing, and work for up to 24 hours a week (up from a current limit of 20 hours). In addition, partners of international students would be entitled to open work rights in the country, while those who complete a postgraduate diploma would receive post-study work rights for two years (up from a current entitlement of one year).

    International student numbers increase in New Zealand

    The number of international students at seven of New Zealand's eight universities is larger now than at this time last year. This follows the lifting of Covid restrictions, and runs counter to a drop in the number of domestic students at five of the universities. The only university not to report an increase in international students is the University of Otago, which will announce its figures later in the year.

    International student numbers in New Zealand remain lower than before Covid

    A total of 7,413 people arrived in New Zealand on student visas in January, 62 per cent less than the 19,551 that arrived in the same month of 2020. However, this is an increase on January 2022, when only 90 international students came to the country, prior to Covid restrictions being lifted.

    Universities in New Zealand consider chartering flights to help international students

    The chief executive of Universities New Zealand has said his organisation is considering chartering flights to ease the arrival of international students. This year, many are expected to find booking plane tickets to the country too difficult or expensive.

    New Zealand to make visa extensions

    The New Zealand government are moving to extend both their Working Holiday Visas as well as widening the arrival period for new visa holders. The move will make studying and working in the country easier for some international students and help them remain for longer.
