Established in 1885, Edge Hill University is a campus-based public university located in Ormskirk, Lancashire. The university offers an impressive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and continued professional development courses and is fast becoming one of the UK’s most exciting modern universities.
The university opened its doors more than 130 years ago, as England’s first non-denominational teacher training college for women, and has since grown in size and expanded its educational offering to support a community of around 13,500 students. There are more than 130 undergraduate courses available, spanning a large variety of subject areas and delivered by three academic faculties; the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Health and Social Care.
The university’s 160-acre campus is an award-winning landscaped site, populated by specialist academic facilities built in the 1990s, with plenty of green space and recreational facilities to ensure an enriching and well-rounded student experience. It is located in the heart of the North West, midway between Liverpool and Preston, and has excellent connections to major cities in the UK.
The university has a superb track record for student satisfaction, and has recently completed significant investment in its campus infrastructure and facilities. It has the accolade of being named the Modern University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022, and continues to enhance its growing reputation for excellence.

It’s an exciting time to be a student at Edge Hill University, recently awarded University of the Year for Student Experience (Daily Mail University Guide 2026). New campus developments opened in 2024 including modern ensuite accommodation facilities, a brand-new life sciences building, and a fully revamped students union, designed in collaboration with current students to serve as the vibrant social heart of the campus.
This is all part of a GBP 35 million student life redevelopment plan, which aims to enhance the extra-curricular facilities and services available to Edge Hill students every day.
A key feature of the redevelopment is the brand-new GBP 8.5 million student union, a multi-use facility offering flexible indoor spaces for a variety of student activities. The building also includes outdoor social areas for recreation and temporary events, as well as dedicated rooms for the university’s clubs and special interest societies. The union is connected to the wider university community through interactive technologies and student-focused programming, creating a dynamic campus atmosphere that encourages students to achieve their personal and academic goals.

Most of all, staff are enthusiastic about the success of their students, and always willing to listen and provide support. The university offers many options to complement undergraduate study, from a sandwich year working in industry to shorter term work placement and even studying abroad, always ensuring that its superb quality of teaching and support is always available.
Edge Hill University has been named as the Modern University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022, and the quality of its teaching delivery is one of the fundamental reasons which contributed to this.
Edge Hill University offers a large selection of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, spanning a wide spectrum of subject areas, with excellent connections to regional industry and employment markets.
Courses are delivered though the university’s three academic faculties, each of which is further comprised of the following subject areas:
The Edge Hill University campus comprises 160 acres of award winning academic facilities and recreational spaces. The university has invested over GBP 350 million to make its campus a truly self-contained learning environment, offering its students the very best university and lifestyle experiences, and is a fantastic place to live and work.
The university library contains much more than bookshelves, with a fully modernised suite of individual and group study spaces and superb digital resources. Classrooms and lecture theatres are spacious and welcoming, while being furnished with the latest interactive teaching technologies. The recently refurbished sports centre is fit for students of all abilities, from first timers to casual users and elite competitors, while the brand-new students’ union building provides a huge variety of resources for students to use year-round.
There are student bars on campus, within easy walk of student accommodation buildings. Edge Hill was recently ranked 1st in the UK for accommodation (Uni Compare 2025 and 2026), and if this isn’t enough, the university has just invested a further GBP 23.6 million to add another 232 ensuite rooms for future residents.

View my postsFinal year mature student, the first of my family to attend uni, I was understandably terrified. Having just finished a BTEC at college after leaving my job and becoming Uncle I had no idea how I was going to manage this new experience. After a few months of adjustment I found my footing and have loved the journey, whether it was living with strangers on campus in the first year (some of these I look at as my closest friends), to privately renting in Ormskirk. Looking forward to what comes next.
