Glyndŵr University, Wrexham is a vibrant university where all students receive a personalised education and is one of the youngest universities in the UK. Named after Welsh hero Owain Glyndŵr, the university is inspired by his bold spirit which nourished a love of learning and enterprise with an international perspective.
Wrexham Glyndŵr may have only been established in 2008, but an excellent education has been provided on the Wrexham campus since 1887, when it was the Wrexham School of Science and Art.
Today, the university is spread across three campuses in North Wales – Wrexham, Northop and St Asaph.
The university’s main campus is based in the lively town of Wrexham, which offers students a mixture of city and nature. Wrexham lies on the Welsh border, where there are easy transport links to Liverpool and Manchester.
Students can enjoy the beautiful North Welsh setting where they’ll find coastlines, mountains, waterfalls, countryside and rivers in abundance. North Wales was named by the Lonely Planet in 2017 as one of the top places in the world to visit. It was the only UK location to place in the Best in Travel rankings, which is put together by expert travel writers and publishers.
Wrexham Glyndŵr is a small university in comparison to many others in the UK, however students benefit from a tight-knit community, excellent support services and close student–professor relationships. It has many international links and invaluable partnerships with other universities, businesses and organisations, including commercial relationships such as Airbus, the BBC, Toyota and more.
In the most recent Whatuni Student Choice Awards, Wrexham Glyndŵr University climbed 45 places in the University of the Year rankings, placing within the top 100 at 68th.
It additionally ranked within the top 20 for courses and lecturers and climbed the ranks in the following league tables: Job Prospects, Student Support, Student Union, and Clubs and Societies.
The Whatuni Student Choice Awards are based on the reviews given by over 41,000 students from around the UK.
The Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham Glyndŵr University, Professor Maria Hinfelaar, said, “At Wrexham Glyndwr University, we are very much student-centred and that has been reflected in these student-led awards...Of course, we intend to build on this year’s success – we have been working over the last couple of years to transform the university and that work continues. We are continuing to improve the quality of our teaching and research and are seeing more and more fantastic achievements from our graduates.”
A supportive teaching environment with a community feel is provided at Wrexham Glyndŵr. The university is dedicated to helping students reach their goals and full potential. Classes are small in size and professors are regularly available so students can receive useful, personalised support.
In the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment, Wrexham Glyndŵr achieved silver status, in recognition of its high-quality teaching. The study found that the university, “encourages high levels of student engagement, technology-enhanced learning and industry relevance in the curriculum,” and that it, “delivers high quality teaching, learning and outcomes for its students.”
Additionally, Wrexham Glyndŵr has a widening participation department that works to ensure everyone has an equal chance to succeed in higher education.
Students can pick from a wide variety of exciting career-focused courses that all consist of practical experience. This boosts graduate prospects, as students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed in the real world. Courses are designed in partnership with industry.
Wrexham Glyndŵr has two academic faculties: the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology; and the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences. It is also home to the North West Business School.

Foundation year courses are on offer, for those who wish to study at degree level but cannot currently meet the entry requirements. This is also a good option for those who left education several years ago, or those who are going down a new career path.

The Wrexham Glyndŵr Language Centre provides English support and can help students reach their language goals. Those who cannot meet the English language requirements, can improve their skills before they begin their academic course through Pre-Sessional English Language courses or Intensive English Language courses.
With most found on the Wrexham campus, the university has many modern facilities that are dedicated to improving the student experience.
Facilities include a research centre, conference and performance centre, Theatre Studio and the William Aston Hall which has 900 seats, a bar and on-site parking. A recent GBP 5 million investment has seen the construction of the Creative Industries Building, where BBC Wales in Wrexham is now located.
Wrexham Glyndŵr’s Students’ Union (SU) achieved the Small and Specialist Students’ Union of the Year award in 2016, from NUS Wales. The SU is an inclusive organisation where all student voices are heard. It offers many clubs and societies for all to get involved with.
The town of Wrexham has many amenities for students to use outside of their study time, such as shopping centres, historical sites, a cinema, bars and clubs, cafes and restaurants, and transport links to the rest of the UK and beyond. Those who love outdoor activities can enjoy walking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and rock climbing.
For students commencing their studies at Wrexham Glyndŵr in 2019/20, they can expect to pay the following annual tuition fees:
These cover tuition fees only and they do not cover any accommodation or living costs. Fees are paid annually and stay at the same rate throughout the degree course.
Students who progress into undergraduate study after successfully completing the International Foundation Year will receive an accommodation scholarship for their first year of undergraduate study and will be eligible for a scholarship bursary.
