Overview

Based in Central London, London South Bank University (LSBU) is one of the capital’s largest universities. It was founded in 1892 and is now home to more than 2,000 international students from over 130 countries.

LSBU is dedicated to providing students with the best education where they’ll develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the professional world. There are seven schools offering over 400 courses with many professionally accredited and all globally recognised.

LSBU has many industry partners and courses are tailored to industry needs. Courses are led by experts and specialists, and many programmes include work experience opportunities. LSBU was named the University of the Year for Graduate Employment in both 2018 and 2019 by the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide. It’s also in the Guardian University League Table top 100 universities.

It also received an award for being the Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards. This recognises the university’s exceptional entrepreneurial support given to students, staff, alumni and local community.

International students will encounter a diverse and nurturing culture and feel like they belong as soon as they enter the university. The multicultural city of London accommodates all, and the university’s abundant, modern facilities are highly useful for both educational and non-academic purposes.

A range of bursaries and financial support is on offer to eligible students, and the international office is on-hand to assist international students with whatever they need. University league tables 2020

London South Bank University has excelled in this year’s Guardian League Table, where it has climbed ten places, reaching its highest ever ranking of 68 out of 121 UK universities. LSBU has climbed 24 places overall since the 2017 Guardian League Table.

The table placed LSBU as third in the UK for graduate career outcomes. It additionally ranks third for social work and seventh for accountancy and finance.

This year has also seen LSBU climb the Complete University Guide 2020 national league table by six places. It has climbed 21 places overall in the table since 2017.

Top global university for social impact

In the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, LSBU has placed within the top 200 institutions in the world for its social impact. This is a new set of global rankings which are based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). LSBU placed 4th in the UK and 24th in the world for SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities.

TEF Silver Status

The standard of teaching at LSBU has been awarded Silver Status by the UK government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The TEF judging panel noted that LSBU stood out for:

Seven academic schools comprise London South Bank University, each offering its own unique, diverse and innovative learning environment. There are more than 400 courses on offer:

School of Applied Sciences

Courses in bakery, bioscience, food science, forensic science, nutrition, psychology, and sports science.

School of Arts and Creative Industries

Courses in arts and performance, creative approaches, creative technologies, film and media, and interdisciplinary practice.

School of the Built Environment and Architecture

Courses in architecture, civil and building services engineering, construction management, real estate, and surveying.

School of Business

Courses in accounting, business, enterprise, finance, marketing, and management and people.

School of Engineering

Courses in chemical and petroleum, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, IT, and mechanical engineering and design.

School of Health and Social Care

Courses in adult, allied health professions, children’s, mental health and learning disabilities, and social work.

School of Law and Social Sciences

Courses in criminology, education, hospitality, housing, planning, politics, sociology and tourism.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students from outside the EU can apply to London South Bank University by completing the LSBU Online Application Form. They will need to provide:

  • Passport
  • Copies of UK visas
  • Academic qualifications
  • Letter of reference
  • Personal statement.

Students can only make one application but they can choose to apply to a maximum of two courses.

English language requirements

Those whose native language is not English will need to prove their English language proficiency.

  • Undergraduate students need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band, or equivalent
  • Postgraduate taught students need an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band, or equivalent.

There are a range of programmes for international students who can’t meet the requirements for direct entry onto certain academic courses. These include:

Facilities

Facilities

London South Bank University has all the facilities needed to deeply enrich student learning. More than GBP 50 million has been invested into student buildings and learning areas in recent years.

Course facilities

There are countless industry-standard facilities to support vocational learning such as forensic labs, psychology labs, a physiology suite, interviewing rooms, a theatre and a media centre.

Student Centre

This is a central hub where students can socialise, study in groups, and find plenty of support services. This includes employability, accommodation, financial and disability support. There is also the Students’ Union, a cafe and a bar.

Library

Libraries that offer IT support can be found at the Southwark and Havering campuses. Both consist of many resources – the Perry Library alone has more than 300,000 print books, 90 open access computers and many study areas. Students also have access to more than 18,000 journals and other resources online.

Accommodation

LSBU has four residential halls for students which are close to the main campus. These are safe and comfortable spaces where international students can easily transition to life in the UK. A variety of options are available and students are guaranteed a place if they apply by the given deadline.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

To help students with their tuition fees and other expenses they have during their time studying, London South Bank University has a variety of scholarships and discounts on offer. LSBU has given more than GBP 1 million in financial support to international students.

International Scholarships

Eligible international students may be able to receive a scholarship of GBP 1,580. This is received as a tuition fee reduction and is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

International Merit Scholarships

Students may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to GBP 4,000 in the first academic year. This is for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught students who show academic excellence.

LSBU Loyalty Award

To support student career success, graduates of LSBU may be eligible to receive postgraduate tuition discounts.

The ennrolling process was a cold experience. The university seem more interested in money than people though they did give me ALF fund small change when I applied. sometimes lecturers didnt turn up and at times seemed sarcastic and cold. true friendship etc was never encouraged between students only superficiality.
