The Open University (OU) was established in 1969 as the world’s first ‘open’ university. It is a distance learning university with an open entry policy, with nearly 170,000 students interacting online from home and another 23 million learners on the OU’s open platforms, OpenLearn and FutureLearn. The administrative centre of the university is located in Buckinghamshire, UK. The faculties available at the OU include Arts, Education and Language Studies, Health and Social Care, Law, Mathematics, Computing and Technology, Science, Social Science and Business. The OU’s modules are designed by multi-disciplinary course teams made up of academics, educational technologists and media specialists. The OU has a network of more than 5,000 tutors – the largest in the UK – who mark assignments, provide detailed written feedback and offer support to students by telephone, email, or computer conferencing.
