The university has put in place numerous measures to safeguard the health and well-being of all staff and students. Queen Mary has plans to welcome students in September 2020, however, in the event that some students are unable to travel the university will facilitate educational access online, using a blended learning methodology.
All government guidance and protocols are adhered to with a view to ensuring the campus is Covid-19 secure. This includes the reconfiguration of facilities such as lecture theatres, libraries, learning spaces and social spaces.
The university has not made changes to the entry criteria and scholarships are still available for eligible students. Pre-sessional English courses remain available, with some being offered online. Queen Mary also have a comprehensive set of resources to assist students, which includes regular updates on the situation. Students can consult the university website for more.
Queen Mary University of London has opened an International Centre for Teaching and Learning (ICTL) with one of China’s top universities, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU).
The centre, which launched on 25 June 2018, forms part of the Queen Mary University of London Engineering School of NPU (QMES), a Sino-foreign Joint Educational Institute. Its aim is to establish the best teaching and learning practice across STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
The university recently launched a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, specifically designed for the social sector. This undergraduate programme is the first of its kind in the UK.
The university recently launched a Resilient Futures India Initiative. Based in New Delhi, this project invites experts from both India and UK to discuss complex global challenges including equality, health and environmental sustainability.

Queen Mary’s teaching methods are varied. As well as lectures, students may also experience small group teaching including tutorials, seminars, workshops, exercise classes and problem-based learning (PBL) sessions (for medicine and some materials courses). Most students will also have the chance to work on group projects. This is a very useful experience for the real world of work, where team work ability is highly prized.
All university students need to develop the skill of independent study and students will get good experience of this working on essays, reports, projects, final year dissertations and general reading around the subject. This can be a big difference from school or college but is another very useful and transferable skill.
The university’s Learning Development service teaches students a range of workshops on aspects like note-taking and organisational skills, and also runs tutorials on any aspect of study plus drop-in maths support.

In the QS subject rankings 2021, Performing arts, English Language and Literature, and law were ranked in the global top 50. In the Guardian University Guide 2021 rankings, law was ranked 12th in the UK. The faculty offers degrees in a wide range of disciplines, from law and politics, to film studies and literature. Its research grant funding is around GBP 7 million annually, and more than GBP 1 million is invested in scholarships for research students.
The faculty provides research and teaching excellence across engineering, science and mathematics through its five academic schools.
The faculty has invested over GBP 50 million into buildings, equipment and teaching practices in the past few years to ensure that students are taught using the most advanced teaching methods in first-class laboratories.
Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry is a faculty of Queen Mary. Through partnership with its linked trusts, notably Barts Health NHS Trust, and its associated University Hospital Trust Homerton, Newham, Whipps Cross and Queen’s (Romford), the school’s research and teaching is informed by an exceptionally wide ranging and stimulating clinical environment.
According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry is placed within the top seven UK institutions in all three Units of Assessment namely Clinical Medicine; Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care; and Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy. It is nationally and internationally recognised for research and attracts GBP 40 million annually in research income. Dentistry and Medicine are ranked 11th and 15th in the UK respectively by the Guardian University Guide 2020.

Queen Mary accepts a broad range of overseas qualifications. Students must check for country/region specific information to find out whether they have the right qualifications.
International students whose first language is not English must be able to provide recent evidence that their spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programmes for which they have applied. Queen Mary is home to one of the largest self-contained student campuses in central London. It is also home to a range of facilities for students to use and enjoy across its campuses in the heart of the capital.
With plenty of greenery and outdoor spaces, its largest campus in Mile End offers students a safe and peaceful space to relax, study and socialise. It has everything that students need. As well as lecture theatres, laboratories and an extensive 24-hour library, it has shops, restaurants, a bar, gym, bank and accommodation all on site. All facilities are a five-minute walk away, making student lives easy.
Queen Mary’s 24-hour Library in Mile End recently underwent a GBP 1.5 million refurbishment, providing even more study and computer spaces. Medical and dental students can make use of the specialist medical libraries at Whitechapel and West Smithfield. All students have access to the University of London’s Senate House Library in Bloomsbury.
The Student Health Service can be found at the Mile End campus.
Students have access to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, including the London Aquatics Centre as well as basketball and netball facilities.
QMotion is the sport and fitness centre for Queen Mary University of London at the Mile End campus. There is also a smaller gym located at the Charterhouse Square campus for Medicine and Dentistry students.
The Hub is home to a majority of the Union's activities at Mile End with the Union Reception, bookable spaces for student groups and societies, social spaces and more. Barts and The London Students’ Association (BLSA) has its own set of facilities at the Whitechapel campus for medicine and dentistry students.
Queen Mary University of London has a total of 2,928 bed spaces to offer to new applicants at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
From financial guidance to mentoring schemes, the university offers lots of advice and support to help its students navigate the different stages of student life and fulfil their potential.
There are a number of sources of funding available for international students at Queen Mary.
