Queen Mary University of London (Queen Mary) is a world-leading institution based at five campuses across east and central London. Its history dates back to 1785, with the founding of England’s first medical school at the Royal London Hospital. Students can study a wide variety of degrees including humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering. The university places 19th in the UK and 114th in the world (QS Subject rankings 2021) and was the first Russell Group institution to deliver degree apprenticeship programmes.
The institution strives to provide students with the perfect learning environment and has invested GBP 105 million in new facilities over the past five years. From a redevelopment of the engineering building that introduces brand new, state-of-the-art robotics facilities, to the UK’s first new dental school in forty years, Queen Mary is constantly improving its student offering.
Queen Mary boasts a hugely diverse student population, with over 27,000 students from more than 160 different countries, and 50 per cent of the university’s student community is made up of international students.
The award-winning careers service on offer at the institution provides students with the opportunity to book one-to-one careers appointments with trained advisors, look through over 2,000 work experience opportunities and attend events to meet employers from all over the UK. This has led to Queen Mary being ranked 10th in the UK for graduate starting salaries by the Sunday Times Good University Guide.
Research at Queen Mary is world-leading, as academics at the peak of their careers work to influence areas such as cancer treatment and astronomy. In fact, Queen Mary was ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of research outputs (i.e. at 3* and 4* level) in the most recent REF2014 exercise.
The university has put in place numerous measures to safeguard the health and well-being of all staff and students. Queen Mary has plans to welcome students in September 2020, however, in the event that some students are unable to travel the university will facilitate educational access online, using a blended learning methodology.
All government guidance and protocols are adhered to with a view to ensuring the campus is Covid-19 secure. This includes the reconfiguration of facilities such as lecture theatres, libraries, learning spaces and social spaces.
The university has not made changes to the entry criteria and scholarships are still available for eligible students. Pre-sessional English courses remain available, with some being offered online. Queen Mary also have a comprehensive set of resources to assist students, which includes regular updates on the situation. Students can consult the university website for more.

Its aim is to establish the best teaching and learning practice across STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
The university recently launched a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, specifically designed for the social sector. This undergraduate programme is the first of its kind in the UK.
The university recently launched a Resilient Futures India Initiative. Based in New Delhi, this project invites experts from both India and UK to discuss complex global challenges including equality, health and environmental sustainability.

Queen Mary offers students a stimulating, supportive and high-quality learning experience, with teaching inspired by world-leading research. Queen Mary ranks second in London among Russell Group universities for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2018), with a number of its subject areas receiving over 90 per cent for overall satisfaction including drama, German, history, Iberian studies and medicine.
Queen Mary’s teaching methods are varied. As well as lectures, students may also experience small group teaching including tutorials, seminars, workshops, exercise classes and problem-based learning (PBL) sessions (for medicine and some materials courses). Most students will also have the chance to work on group projects. This is a very useful experience for the real world of work, where team work ability is highly prized.
All university students need to develop the skill of independent study and students will get good experience of this working on essays, reports, projects, final year dissertations and general reading around the subject. This can be a big difference from school or college but is another very useful and transferable skill.
The university’s Learning Development service teaches students a range of workshops on aspects like note-taking and organisational skills, and also runs tutorials on any aspect of study plus drop-in maths support.

I am currently enrolled in a PhD programme in Law at Queen Mary University of London. I started in September 2013 and normally a full time PhD lasts three years. When I decided to apply for the programme I mainly chose Queen Mary because my professor is a leading expert on EU Criminal Law which is the topic of my PhD. However, during the first couple of months I also valued more and more the university as such. First of all there are a lot of seminar to attend and interesting lectures on both organizational as well as subject-matter issues. Second, there is a special course for PhD students which teaches valuable research skills and helps students of different fields of law to socialise. On top of that there are a lot of social activities for postgraduate research students from all different fields beyond law. All in all this creates a nice atmosphere in which I can improve my research skills, learn more about my topic and get in touch with a lot of other students.+ Read more - Show less

I had great academic experiences at Queen Mary. I took 3 literature classes and 1 political science class. QM had an exchange with my university, so I didn't have to pay extra tuition or program fees. All of my classes were very demanding but also very rewarding. I got a lot of individual attention from all of my professors and the teaching assistants who led our smaller groups. My favorite class was Contemporary Writing, which examined books written in the previous two years. I lived in the Queen Mary dorms and attending several of the campus events. I lived with other international students and first year QM students and liked the area, Mile End.+ Read more - Show less
