With 185 historical years of educating students, the Royal College of Art has evolved over time into a premier institute known for its influential postgraduate art and design programmes. Started in 1837 as the Government School of Design; the College is located in Kensington Gore, London. London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world that is known for its creativity, diversity and culture. The city has been consecutively ranked for three years in a row as the world’s best student city by QS Rankings.

The Royal College of Art was at the forefront of the New Sculpture movement and was at the center of the explosion of Pop Art culture in Britain. Its alumni have contributed to art and design over the century. Alumni like Gavin Turk, Tracey Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman were part of the ‘Young British Artists’ movement.

In 1967, the College received its Royal Charter as an Institution of University Status. The objective of the college is to promote the learning and acquisition of the principles and practice of art and design. Importance is given to teaching, research and collaboration with industry and commerce.

The College offers MA, M.Phil and PhD degrees. The various schools are School of Architecture, School of Arts and Humanities, School of Communication and School of Design. The various departments include animation, architecture, ceramics and glass, communication art and design, conservation, curating contemporary art, design interactions, design products, fashion menswear, fashion women wear, jewelry, history of design, industrial design engineering, painting, photography, printmaking, sculptures, textiles, vehicle design, and film and television.

Students who are joining Royal College of Art and who don’t have the required English language requirements for their programme can attend an eight-week intensive EAP Pre-Sessional course. This course is useful for students who will learn the language and communication skills needed for their programme.

The Royal College of Art has over 180 scholarships, awards, bursaries and prizes on offer. Students will need to hold a degree offer in order to apply for a scholarship. It is better to apply for the programme in the first application round as a majority of scholarships are offered during this round. Students can also apply for external funding options from the Government, education and arts and culture organizations.

After completion of the programme, students can apply for a Graduate Visa (Post Study). This new immigration route will allow international students to remain in the UK for two years after they have completed their studies. Those who have completed their PhD can stay for three years.
