The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) offers over 300 study programmes, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, professional courses, vocational training, and HNDs. Home to over 40,000 students, with an international cohort representing over 50 countries, it provides an innovative and exciting educational experience with a community feel.
UHI offers more than 140 bachelor’s degree programmes, and specialises in providing academic excellence, regularly incorporating the unique environment and culture of Scotland into its research and curricula. It is a pioneer of blended learning, combining face-to-face teaching with a range of video learning and online technologies.
UHI offers 59 postgraduate taught courses across a range of subjects, as well as a number of research degree opportunities. It ranks third in the UK (and first in Scotland), for postgraduate satisfaction (Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey, 2023), and in the Research Excellence Framework (2021), 75 percent of its research was classed as either world-leading or internationally excellent.
Despite having the largest student population in Scotland, UHI prides itself in its small class sizes, offering a personalised and focussed style of learning. The university ranks among the top 10 most affordable in the UK (Complete University Guide, 2023), and students can choose to live and learn at any one of its more than 70 locations around Scotland, or can study remotely.
Scotland is a unique and exciting study destination for international students, with 88 percent satisfied with all aspects of their university experience (Scotland.org, 2024). No matter which campus they are based at, UHI students enjoy exploring the country’s world-famous scenery, getting involved in outdoor pursuits, and exploring Scotland’s distinctive culture and history.
In September 2023, UHI offered a new, fully funded PhD opportunity examining Gaelic development in the Hebrides, and the various factors which contribute to its social and cultural value. It is hoped that the research will be used to inform minority language policy.
UHI’s North, West and Hebrides’ Stornoway campus is set to complete a GBP 2.3 million transformation project in autumn 2024, with significantly enhanced facilities and resources, and enhanced provision for STEM subjects.

UHI offers some of Scotland’s most affordable courses, but it also has a selection of scholarships, awards and bursaries available to eligible international students to assist them in financing their education.
Financial aid may be granted on account of academic or extra-curricular achievement, a student’s nationality, expertise in a particular subject area, or their financial need. Scholarships are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, with a number of subject-specific funding opportunities for master’s and PhD students.
Scholarships may be paid as a one-off payment, or as annual instalments for the duration of a student’s course.
Students are advised to carefully check the conditions of any scholarship, award, or bursary, and should ensure their application is made in a timely manner and in advance of the deadline.
Students must meet academic entry requirements in order to enrol on a degree programme at UHI. Requirements vary between courses, so students are advised to carefully check the eligibility criteria for their preferred programme.
International students may refer to the accepted qualifications from their home country on the university website.
Broadly speaking, UHI’s minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate degree programmes are an IB Diploma score of 24 points, or an equivalent qualification. Some courses may also require students to have achieved a prior qualification in a specific related subject or subjects.
Postgraduate entry requirements vary according to the level and type of study and the subject chosen. Students must demonstrate an a strong understanding of the field or a closely related subject, such as a strong pass in an undergraduate degree and/or significant professional experience. Most postgraduate taught courses require a minimum award of 2:1 (Upper Second Class) or 2:2 (Lower Second Class) or equivalent, depending on the course.
International students must evidence their English language proficiency in order to study at UHI. English language requirements are as follows:

UHI boasts 11 libraries. All libraries are fully coordinated with one another, and offer an expansive range of books, journals, e-books, and other electronic resources.
University-owned accommodation is available at many of UHI’s campuses, and in instances where it is not, or if a student prefers to rent privately, the university is able to provide advice and guidance on local properties and reputable landlords.
In university residences, students can usually choose between a standard single room or a studio room, with prices in the range of GBP 146 to GBP 188 per week, including WiFi and utility bills.
All campuses feature communal areas for students to relax and socialise. There are a number of places to eat and drink including bars, refectories, and picnic areas, and dedicated study areas are available for group and individual study.
