Overview

As one of the leaders in legal and business education, The University of Law (ULaw) offers programmes at 16 campus locations across the UK, Hong Kong and Germany.

With a history dating back to 1876, ULaw offers an array of empowering undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These cover all areas of law and business and are designed to ensure students have the best possible start to their careers. Students can choose from a wide range of study options at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Programmes are focused on developing commercial awareness, problem-solving and critical thinking skills to help prepare students for real-life challenges.

Students from more than 120 different countries choose The University of Law and each campus location is home to a thriving and supportive international community. Campuses are modern, well-equipped and close to commercial hubs, top law firms and transport connections.

ULaw is unique in its approach to teaching. Future lawyers, criminologists, and business leaders learn in realistic, modern and professional contexts. Plenty of practical and collaborative teaching is included, where students benefit from a high amount of tutor contact hours.

More than 90 per cent of ULaw tutors are qualified lawyers with real-life experience in practice. The university’s business tutors have all been business leaders. With a team of more than 250 professionally-qualified tutors, visiting professors and lecturers, ULaw offers an established teaching methodology that focuses on knowledge and practical skills.

International students can take advantage of the extensive personal, academic and professional support services on offer, from accommodation services to career support. Additionally, students can benefit from an alumni network of over 70,000 members. ULaw is also closely linked with a range of barristers’ chambers and works with 90 top law firms in the UK, many of whom send their lawyers and trainees exclusively to ULaw to develop them.

A high-ranking institution in UK student survey

The University of Law (ULaw) has achieved top ten placements among universities in the UK for five categories in the National Student Survey 2019. The survey, collected from over 330,000 students from 403 eligible institutions, ranks ULaw in the top ten universities for teaching, learning opportunities, academic support, learning resources and student voice. The University of Law was placed at 17th overall in the survey. The university is dedicated to responding to NSS feedback so that it provides the best educational experience for all students. This includes the provision of a highly qualified faculty with practical and relevant industry experience. In addition, ULaw employs an effective, established teaching methodology that gives students the ideal skills needed for a successful career.

At The University of Law, international students can enjoy the expertise of passionate teaching and support staff. The university’s tutors include lawyers and industry professionals with a wealth of practical experience and knowledge of what employers value in graduates.

Campuses are small and friendly and classes incorporate many hours of tutor contact time. Learning methods are varied and designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to think and act like a successful lawyer or business professional. Each student has their own designated tutor to provide ongoing support.

Students will have the added benefit of receiving career guidance and advice from ULaw’s specialist team of legal and business careers advisors. Students are provided with one-to-one career counselling and guidance which provides an excellent platform from which to launch their careers. In addition, the university have a renowned pro bono programme in which students shadow legal practitioners. This allows them to gain exposure to and practical experience of the legal profession.

All courses at The University of Law are created with a unique and innovative outlook on learning to develop students into self-reliant individuals who can stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic professional world. With a wide variety of courses available on campus or online, students can develop their skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, commercial awareness and more.

Undergraduate

International students can pick from a range of undergraduate courses covering the areas of business, criminology, policing and law.

Foundation years are available and are included within four-year degrees. During this time students develop key concepts and skills for degree-level study.

The University of Law also provides a fantastic opportunity to attend their International Leadership Summer School, where students can study in Berlin to develop their employability skills.

Students completing business undergraduate programmes at ULaw Business School can progress on to a business master’s degree for free. This is the first and only offer of its type in the UK based on progression only. However, terms and conditions apply.

Work Placements

A range of the university’s business master’s programmes include the option to complete an extended nine month industry work placement. Supported by the Careers and Employability team, the work placement enables students to put into practice the academic learning alongside practical experience to enhance their professional opportunities. The work placement is the last module of the programme and includes a work-based research project.

For admission to The University of Law, international students need to satisfy several entry requirements.

English language requirements

Most students will need to prove English language proficiency before starting a course at ULaw. This can be through an English language qualification, which will need to meet the university’s minimum requirements. Students are strongly advised to check the eligibility requirements.

Those who have an academic qualification that is equivalent to a UK degree and was taught in a predominantly English-speaking country may not have to prove their English language proficiency.

Pre-Sessional English Language Programme

Students who need to improve their English language levels to qualify for a ULaw course can study the 7–12 week pre-sessional English course.

Visas

Students must also check the visa they’ll need to study at ULaw. The university provides support for receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) if they need a Tier 4 Student visa.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

To help students with their tuition fees and other expenses, The University of Law has a number of scholarships in place. Awards for international students include:

International Bursary

A bursary of GBP 3,000 per year for students of selected nationalities.

International Excellence Scholarship

Postgraduate international students who have achieved academic excellence may be eligible for a scholarship of GBP 5,000. They must have a first-class degree or equivalent and plan to study an eligible course such as the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) or MSc Global Accounting.

Great China Scholarship

ULaw has partnered with the British Council and the Great Britain Campaign to offer eligible students from China a scholarship of GBP 10,000. Students must hold a Chinese passport and have received an offer to study an eligible course, such as a Legal Practice programme (LLM) or MSc Strategic Business Management.

There are also inaugural awards and early-bird discounts for students studying at campuses celebrating their first year of operation, such as Hong Kong.

Professional Service Excellence Bursary

For selected business MSc degrees bursaries of GBP 5,000 are offered to students of selected nationalities.

Facilities include modern IT suites, extensive and up-to-date libraries, study spaces and areas to relax in. All students are given access to the ELITE blackboard system, which provides access to many leading subscription databases and other resources.

Outside of their studies, international students can join one of the many clubs and societies on offer. ULaw provides a great choice of locations, meaning that you can choose to study in vibrant cities like Leeds, London and Manchester, or more historic cities like Chester or Guildford. Wherever you study you will find plenty of entertainment options, such as galleries, theatres, cinemas, shops, restaurants and more.
