Overview

Overview

The University of Manchester was created by the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in October 2004, to form the largest single-site university in the UK. The university, though, traces its roots back to 1824, when UMIST was founded. The university has the largest selection of undergraduate courses in the UK; however, it is the emphasis on postgraduate research that makes Manchester stand out. The university’s library is one of the best-resourced in the UK and is widely acknowledged as one of the great research libraries globally. 25 Nobel Prize winners have worked or studied at the university. The 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked Manchester as the 35th best university in the world, the ninth best in Europe and the fifth best in the UK.

Manchester, recently voted Britain's second city, is an amazing place to be a student. Secondly, the University won University of the Year, which demonstrates its strengths both academically and socially. The library is supposed to be the biggest University library in Britain. The Student Union building holds everything from bars, cafes, shops to opticians and even a club. It also houses the Manchester Academy which hosts both up-and-coming bands and well established, well famous bands.A month ago,the Mauritian society organised the Mancunian sports festival which was a success and things like this make university life fun and dynamic. My advice would be to enjoy university life. show less
