As an international student who had never travelled abroad before, I had a lot of concerns and worries about settling into Portsmouth; I was concerned about making friends, what my course would entail, where I would live and who I would live with, in fact I was just scared of living my home and studying in a country without my immediate family. Firstly, I got support from the University of Portsmouth even when I was back in my home country; I got my accommodation and an airport pickup when I first arrived which made me feel more comfortable and confident about studying abroad. There was also an orientation week that allowed new international students to get settled in and make friends, to also get to know our various departments and the university campus. Portsmouth is a beautiful city, there are a lot of nice places to go to, which includes the beach, the historic dockyard, gunwharf quays and a lot of museums, in fact there are fun activities for everyone. People are always willing to help when you get lost and have slight challenges and they are a bunch of nice and happy people. Everyone I know just says pharmacy is really hard, how do you cope? At the University of Portsmouth, the support we get for our various courses especially pharmacy is tremendous. When you are accepted to study pharmacy you are allocated a personal tutor and a student mentor (a student one year ahead of you who has passed through the first year), they support you and answer any queries you have about your academics. We also have course reps that represent students at meetings with the staff of pharmacy department. Lecturers are of great help, they always ensure student get the best academic knowledge and help available. At the University of Portsmouth, pharmacy is not as challenging because of the support we have, it makes studying pharmacy easier and enables students to learn the qualities, knowledge and skills required for future pharmacists show less

Deciding to further my studies abroad has been a great decision! It has always been a dream of mine to travel to foreign places, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. This experience has really helped develop me as a conscious young adult of the global issues in society today. I was initially worried that the lack of parental supervision might lead to lack of discipline, but I have learnt to organize my time and budget my spending in preparation before stepping into the ‘real world’. The university course I am enrolled in is a very well balanced one with guided assignments and formal assessments. I enjoy my course a lot as it really helps me explore the subject I am interested in. I also never imagined myself doing so many extracurricular activities. University is a great place for me to experiment with new tastes and new hobbies. I’ve been lucky to be accepted in so many new social circles and clubs, developing my interpersonal and communication skills. As our university encourages diversity, my new friends from university are from different walks of life and we’ve built strong bonds through the similarities we share and the differences that we respect. Studying in university is a whole new level of 'studying'. We are not only expected to learn the course syllabus and organise our own time, but also to explore deeper into the subject with our own independent studies. Passion for our subject and inquisitive eagerness is literally the determinant of how far we can go! There is no limit to the knowledge we may reap if we set our minds to it. I am very grateful that I made the decision to go to university for this amazing opportunity to dip my mind in the pool of knowledge. show less
