The IUPUI Effect
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in Indiana, USA, is considered the state’s premier urban research university. Combining the resources of two prestigious universities and a downtown location, IUPUI offers students the opportunity to earn a respected degree from Indiana University or Purdue University while living in a capital city.
IUPUI is home to almost 30,000 students from over 140 countries. It offers 450 academic programs across 17 different schools. Graduating students become part of the global network of over 182,000 current alumni.
The university has won Insight’s ‘Excellence in Higher Education Diversity’ award an impressive seven times. IUPUI has been ranked as one of the top 15 universities for international students by U.S. News & World Report, and consistently ranks within the top universities for first-year student experience nationwide. 94 percent of graduates report positive career outcomes.
The university annually offers over $230 million in scholarships to international undergraduate students. It also shares strong ties with several organizations and education institutions in Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Kenya.
There are many on-campus amenities including six libraries and world-class sports facilities, such as a 25-meter campus swimming pool that was used during Olympic trials. Students can enjoy multiple on-campus dining venues, a theatre, and a games room complete with air hockey, table tennis, and video games. They can also access cutting-edge technology to support their studies, such as 3D printing and virtual reality simulators.
Indianapolis, known locally as Indy, famously hosts the world’s largest single-day sporting event on Earth, the Indianapolis 500. This takes place minutes from campus. Indy is an excellent place to search for work, internships, and OPT opportunities. Several international companies have offices located there, including Eli Lilly, Dow AgroSciences, Salesforce, Infosys, Simon Property Group, and Roche.
Major updates have been made to international student scholarships, degree offerings, and campus facilties, as well as application requirements.
In 2020, the merit award scholarships for undergraduate international and transfer students increased to a minimum of USD 10,000 per award. These awards are managed by the Office of International Affairs, and can be combined with scholarships from different departments.
New bachelor’s degree programmes include the Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science, and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Data and Information Science.
The new master’s degree is the Master of Science in Global Health and Sustainable Development, which is the first master’s program in the U.S. to be designed around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Online English tests are now accepted as proof of English proficiency. Specifically, IUPUI accepts online test scores from TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo.
The campus continues to grow and provide further opportunities to students. The new Multidisciplinary Research and Classroom building features an interdisciplinary research and lab space, a makerspace with 3D printing, collaborative learning spaces, engineering and science-focused lab spaces, and other modernized classrooms containing modern teaching technology. Between classes, students can study in the building’s informal student lounge.
Elsewhere on campus, the newly opened Jaguar Campus Recreation Center features cardio and strength training, as well as free fitness classes for students. It’s the seventh area on campus where students can participate in sports and take physical wellness to the next level.
IUPUI is recognized as one of the top research universities in the U.S. where teaching is to a very high standard. It aims to develop students into global citizens through, for instance, the RISE initiative. Aimed at undergraduates, RISE engages students and helps them grow both academically and professionally. Students are supported by an assigned academic advisor from orientation through to graduation.
Under the mentorship of a staff member at the university, students conduct research or artistic work.
The university’s global partnerships allow the institution to further expand on teaching, helping to educate, serve communities, and conduct vital research. When possible again, students will have the opportunity to travel outside the U.S., providing a cross-cultural experience while they learn.
The initiative ensures students are in suitable learning environments while completing activities. These activities help the wider community and provide learners with service experiences.
Students can get involved in community-based activities such as internships or projects for local businesses and nonprofits. They can apply their knowledge in real working situations, as well as develop skills such as problem solving, decision making, communication, and professional growth.
One example is an engineering and technology program which encourages students to be innovative and think like entrepreneurs. In a series of classes, they create solutions to engineering problems, build prototypes, and go through a patent process to protect their ideas.
IUPUI has 17 distinct schools that confer degrees from Indiana University or Purdue University, including:
Students learn practically and are given opportunities to apply classroom learning to real situations. Collaborative interdisciplinary research is often focused on solving real world problems.
These programs teach real-world skills as well as theoretical principles.
Students can prepare for a career in dentistry by studying in an environment which combines teaching, research and community service.
Students are taught the theoretical and practical skills needed to teach, inspire, and guide learners of all ages.
Offering a range of science degrees, this school aims to develop students into well-rounded scientists who can solve the complex problems of the future.
Known as the first school of Informatics and Computing in the U.S., the school integrates computing, social science, and information systems design, where students can explore how people use technology in different ways.
At this school, students can prepare for a career in nutrition, rehabilitation, or health sciences.
This is the only professional school of art and design in Indiana. Students gain the skills and experience needed to become successful within the fine arts.
Giving students a solid start in the world of law, this school’s focus is to provide students with the knowledge required to pass the bar and start practicing law.
Students are taught how to work in non-profit organizations and create positive change in their communities throughout their careers.
There are many ways for international students to demonstrate English proficiency and meet the undergraduate admission requirements.
To be eligible to study at the university, students are required to reach the following minimum English language test scores:
Those admitted with a TOEFL iBT score of 60–94 or an IELTS score of 5.5–6.5 take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement test. Depending on the EAP test results, they may take EAP courses at the same time as their academic major courses for one or two semesters. Their letter of admission will indicate if they must take this test.
PIE provides seven levels of academic English instruction to international students who want to study at a U.S. college or university. Passing Level five counts towards the English proficiency admission requirement.
Students who require an F1 or J1 visa can begin their studies at IUPUI in the Fall Semester (August) or Spring Semester (January). They may not begin their studies during a summer term. Those who apply for a summer term have their application automatically deferred to the autumn semester.
IUPUI offers a range of scholarships and funding opportunities for international students. The financial value of this funding ranges from USD 10,000 to 100 percent of tuition per year.
Undergraduate international students can qualify for the following scholarships:
Students are automatically considered for these when they apply to the university. They can only receive ONE merit scholarship which can be renewed each year for up to four years. Awards include:

These scholarships are very competitive. Outstanding athletes must contact the relevant coach directly from IUPUI's Athletics website. Athletics scholarships can also be combined with merit scholarships.
These are available through the Sam H. Jones program, one of the nation’s largest service-based scholarship programs.
The university has a range of modern facilities, including state-of-the-art classrooms, auditoriums, world-class athletic amenities, and beautiful outdoor areas. Students are able to take a virtual tour online.
IUPUI offers a range of accommodation options for international students, such as single rooms and four-bedroom apartments.
