Located in Riverside County, California, Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) offers a range of courses across five campus sites. It features two bases in Temecula as well as locations in San Jacinto, Meifee and Banning, with a number of certificate, degree and transfer programs available. It also offers a vast catalogue of online courses so students can learn on the go.
A wide variety of services are provided by the college with the intention of enabling students to maximize their studies. It also offers advice and support, including a counselling service, financial aid, and a program for disabled students. This allows a focus to be placed on allowing students to gain maximum access to the curriculum and attain their learning goals.
MSJC offers a wide range of activities and social events, with student groups and campus departments active throughout the year. From sports clubs to specialist interest groups and volunteering opportunities, students are encouraged to embrace student life, enhance their CVs and give back to the community.
A Student Government Association represents the college’s 18,000 students, striving to tackle concerns and create an enjoyable experience for all. There is also an official student newspaper, The Talon, serving as a representative platform for creative students and budding writers.
Mt. San Jacinto College also runs the MSJC First Year Experience Program to help students settle in quickly. Additional support is provided to students via schemes such as peer mentoring, orientation programs and classes in career planning.
The Mt. San Jacinto Community College District will soon expand access to higher education for residents of Southwest Riverside County and surrounding communities. This is as a result of the USD 56.5 million purchase of two five-story office buildings located in Temecula.
The 350,000-square-foot facility is the size of all of the buildings on the college’s Menifee Valley Campus, which currently serves over 15,000 students.
“I am thrilled that Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) will be able to prepare more students for the education they need to reach their goals at one convenient location,” said Dr. Roger Schultz, College district superintendent/president. “It is a beautiful facility, it aligns with our mission and this is a real milestone in the history of the college district.”
One of the priorities of The City of Temecula, which helped facilitate the purchase, has been to build higher education. The top floor of its former City Hall on Business Park Drive to Mt. San Jacinto College, the home of the current Temecula Higher Education Centre, was leased.
“Providing diverse higher education opportunities is a top priority for the City of Temecula,” Mayor Matt Rahn said. “Today marks the day of great achievement and the celebration of another milestone that has been reached in furthering this mission. The Temecula Valley is eternally grateful for your (MSJC’s) leadership in moving higher education forward and providing quality higher education opportunities locally.”
The college will now be able to merge operations into one district-owned property. MSJC is in the process of the transition, which was anticipated to take at least 18 months from its start date last year. The facility will help the district address shortages in classroom space for courses that students need to earn associate degrees, career certificates or transfer to four-year university degrees.
Some of the study areas students can pursue at MSJC include:
A USD 1.9 million grant allows MSJC to offer a program designed specifically for students seeking a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The grant from the U.S. Department of Education provides students with mentors and tutors, helps counsellors develop strong educational plans and gets students on track to enter 4-year institutions.
The college offers hands-on learning with cutting-edge technology and equipment. These courses prepare students for careers in life science research and development, biomanufacturing, and biotechnology laboratory support.
The Automotive Technology program at MSJC emphasizes a real-world approach to diagnostic skill building and a thorough understanding of system theory and operations. This is accomplished through the use of computer programs, audio-visual and hands-on experience with mock-ups and modern vehicles.
CIS offers students a well-equipped technical environment for both instruction and lab. All CIS courses are taught in computer-equipped classrooms, allowing hands-on experience in the use of industry-standard hardware, application software, operating systems, networking and programming tools. MSJC also offers focused, specialized areas of study in Networking, Internet Authoring, Programming and others.
Students can learn the skills they need to start their careers in radio, TV, motion pictures, cruise ships, casinos and more. MSJC is one of few colleges to have its own radio and TV stations to train students.
MSJC's Distance Education offers a variety of online courses to fulfil the general education and/or transfer pattern requirements. A USD 50,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation allows MSJC to offer a free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called ‘Crafting an Effective Writer: Language Tools’, available to students around the world.
This program is designed to support students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields. STEM provides academic, career and transfer readiness by enriching their MSJC experience through connections with campus resources. It also offers students individualized counselling, faculty mentoring, workshops and an array of other valuable opportunities.
Students can benefit from the STEM programme in many ways, such as:
Mt. San Jacinto College is a two-year community college offering a comprehensive day and evening program of transfer, vocational, and remedial education.
Students can use the checklist below as they complete their application. Students must include some of the following documents, including:
For students applying for 2020/2021 entry, Mt. San Jacinto College will be offering online studies until It is safe to return to campus for face to face teaching. Students will be required to sign an acknowledged form for the temporary transition to online studies.
The Enrolment Services Office provides numerous services to students and members of the community, including the general information about the college. Students will also receive petitions to enter class late, transcripts, credit by examination and enrolment verification, all of which are initiated in the office.
The Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOP&S) was established as a result of Assembly Bill 164 passed by the California Legislature in 1969, to increase the enrolment of academically disadvantaged and low-income students on community college campuses.
While Mt. San Jacinto College subscribes to, and supports, the philosophy that primary responsibility for funding college expenses rests with students and their families, the college recognizes that some students and/or their families have limited financial resources and are unable to meet all of the expenses associated with higher education without supplemental assistance.
The Associate Degree for Transfer (A.A.-T or A.S.-T) or ADT guarantees students will meet the California State University (CSU) system minimum eligibility requirements. Students earning an ADT will be admitted to a CSU. They may be granted a bump in their GPA when applying to an impacted campus outside their local area or an impacted major that is deemed similar.
A counsellor will help the students determine which CSU's offer bachelor's degrees that correspond to their ADT degree. It is still important for them to apply to the schools that interest them and follow admissions deadlines to be considered.
The MSJC First Year Experience (FYE) Program will give students an enhanced college experience during their first two semesters. At the end of their first year, they will have successfully completed their basic skills coursework and will have taken transferable college level courses that contribute to their degree.
The benefits of the Honors Enrichment Program for students include close interactions between students in the program and professors, challenging courses with fellow honors students, the exploration of current issues in the interdisciplinary seminar, and specific guidance from counsellors and faculty advisers concerning the course of studies most suitable for transferring to a four-year university and for achieving professional objectives.
