Southern Illinois University has taken significant steps to safeguard the wellbeing of students and staff at the university with the advent of Covid-19. The university has taken its cue from government and public health guidelines, significantly reducing access and activities on campus. This includes taking steps to ensure that academic classes will be offered in three formats this autumn (2020), including online only, in person, and a hybrid of both online and in-person.
Measures have been taken to offer student services online and in cases where it is necessary for students or staff to come to the campus in-person strict procedures are in place, including social distancing and a booking system. The university has a number of plans to mitigate the impact of the pandemic including:
Registrations and applications are still open for the autumn term of 2020, which includes international student applications. Students are however encouraged to contact the university to verify if their desired course will be offered online, as travel restrictions may still be in place and visa applications and issuing possibly suspended. The university has set up a dedicated Covid-19 online information page and the Center for International Education has a frequently asked question (FAQ) page dedicated to international students.
At SIU, teaching is immersive, collaborative and led by expert faculty where student learning is more than just a classroom experience.
There are plenty of research opportunities for all undergraduate and graduate students to utilize. The university ranks within the top five percent of U.S. institutions for research (Carnegie Foundation). The Research-Enriched Academic Challenge (REACH) offers students grants for research opportunities, where they work alongside faculty mentors.
Other opportunities include the Honors Program which provides high-achieving students with a small group, private college experience. Study abroad placements allow students to gain a new perspective of the world. There are also Living/Learning Communities, for those who wish to live with like-minded students and enhance their educational experiences.
