Study abroad is always a challenge. Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) has been my second home for over four years - from undergraduate to graduate studies. First thing what I have noticed, is the difference between European and American education system. In Europe, yes you get an education free of charge, but that is all - is like a mass production of people with degrees. Here in USA, being at the college is a lifestyle, is a part of your life that you will never forget. I am glad that I went to SFA. It is consider a smaller state college - but for a foreigner it does not feel that way. It has a huge, beautiful campus, lot of outdoor activities and a new STEM building that is in the process of being built and so far looks amazing!!!!! Professors are so different here than what I am used to from Europe. They want you to succeed, they remember you - because classes are fairly small, so you get very individual approach. I am a biotechnology graduate student, and I am loving it! Each of the graduate students has its own research project, so you get a lot of freedom in your studies, however they also require your absolute devotion. You do not do this to get a degree - you do this because you love what you are doing. And of course you have days when you want to give up - you miss your home, you are here alone, classes are hard - and in a different language that your native one, you feel overwhelmed. But nothing can beat the feeling, when you succeed even in a small step! The biology department also offers teaching assistantship, which helps you to pay tuition and living expenses. We get travel grants to see scientific conferences such as :ASBMB, which is a lifetime experience. Overall, you learn how to become a professional in your field. If you are coming with a strong work ethic - great! if not- you are going to acquire one. But that is an necessity in order to succeed in life. These were the best and most intense years of my life. Totally worthy! show less
