The University of Missouri (MU) was the first public university to be established west of the Mississippi river. Founded in 1839, the university, also called Mizzou, now welcomes over 31,000 students coming from all 50 U.S. states and from over 110 different countries around the world. Mizzou’s academic prowess and standing is exemplified by its membership of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), an invitation first received back in 1908.
Mizzou consists of 13 schools and colleges through which it offers more than 300 programs. The university’s accomplished faculty attracts about 70 percent of the state’s revenue for research in public universities. MU’s faculty, which includes a Nobel laureate and 12 members of the National Academy of Sciences, spends around USD 430 million each year on scientific research. It is considered a top university in the country for undergraduate student participation in research.
The main campus is set on 1,262 acres and the university has several buildings on campus known for their historic significance. There are various subject-specific libraries, museums, and galleries that showcase the rich history of Missouri. Accommodation is available for international students in the form of residence halls and apartment-style housing. Mizzou has a very active athletics culture, and the university offers state-of-the-art facilities to support sporty students.
International students have access to a variety of scholarships, along with various on-campus work opportunities. Students can join one of the 600 plus student-run organizations, ranging from a student newspaper to sports. Mizzou’s career resources help students find jobs during their duration of study and after completion.
Support is available to students to help them adjust to life on campus, socialize and discover work options, from international student ambassadors who speak different languages and through the International Center and Career Center.

The NextGen Precision Health Center is the latest University of Missouri research center. The state-of-the-art 24,000 square meter complex brings expert health researchers and clinicians together under one roof in search of solutions to the world’s greatest health challenges. The building provides the facilities and resources needed to integrate multidisciplinary laboratory space with advanced analytical instrumentation, computational processing, and pilot-scale manufacturing to create a comprehensive precision health research pipeline.
Starting with the Fall 2023 term, Mizzou is implementing a new, plateaued, flat tuition model for undergraduate students. This new tuition model will make educational costs more transparent, predictable, and will also simplify students’ bills. Undergraduate students will pay a flat tuition rate according to their degree program for course loads ranging from 12-18 credits per semester. The flat rate will give undergraduate students the option to take additional credits at no additional cost, providing the opportunity to graduate faster and/or explore other areas of academic interest without slowing their time to degree completion.
