The University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest institutions for higher education in the United States, boasting many impressive alumni, including: Nobel Prize winners, journalists, athletes, and the Oscar-winning actor, Gene Kelly. The university’s main campus, located in Oakland, is a sprawling 132 acres and there are three additional regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, and Johnstown, all of which offer four-year degrees.
The Career Center works with students during their time at the institution to help them explore their interests and career goals, with the aim of preparing students to land the job of their dreams. Students can get information on a variety of skills, such as CV writing, penning the perfect cover letter, and finding internship opportunities.
The university also offers a wide range of support resources for students who wish to get advice, help, or information. These include a confidential counselling service, which offers one-to-one sessions, couples’ therapy and workshops. There is also a students' health service, a dedicated disability resources center, and a service for parents and families.
Students are encouraged to get involved in extra-curricular activities to expand their experience at the university. These include the Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC), a range of experiences, programs, and events to help ensure that students get the most out of their time at Pitt. Divided into ten goal areas, students gain skills in everything from leadership to career preparation.
There are over 400 clubs and organizations run by the Student Organization Resource Center, which include sports clubs, special interest groups, and a student magazine. This is an especially ideal opportunity for budding journalists to get involved and gain first-hand experience.

At the University of Pittsburgh, there is a six-year graduation rate of 83 percent and, a 93 percent retention rate from freshmen to sophomore year.
The university runs many initiatives to help prepare and develop students for employability upon graduation.
This includes the Career Center, which connects students with relevant organizations and internship opportunities across the country. This office runs services such as training sessions and seminars, to develop students’ career skills, helping them stand out to potential employers.
94 percent of University Pittsburgh graduates are successfully placed in employment or in higher study within six months of graduation.
The University of Pittsburgh considers the safety of staff, students and members of the university community a key priority. With the advent of Covid-19 this has seen the university introduce a number of changes and measures to support students and staff. Key to this is the university’s ‘Resilience Framework’. The framework is designed to allow the university to monitor the pandemic globally and make the best and most informed decisions.
The framework comprises three operational levels, namely the guarded risk posture, the elevated risk posture and high risk posture.
Procedures related to health, faculty working, campus learning, meetings, activities, travel and facilities have all been put in place to ensure student safety. This includes safety guidelines, thorough cleaning, social distancing, restricted access, travel advisories, work from home support and creating Covid-19 secure spaces.
The university has also created a dedicated Covid-19 website, which is regularly updated and outlines all policies, procedures and information.

The University of Pittsburgh offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a variety of subjects, ranging from accounting and anthropology, to medicine and Asian studies.

The University of Pittsburgh offers a range of on-and off-campus housing for students, from residence halls to apartments.
Undergraduates starting in the fall term are guaranteed on-campus housing for three years, as long as they pay an enrollment fee by May 1st.
On campus, each room has basic cable television provided, along with an extra-long twin bed with mattress, desk, wardrobe/closet, chair and dresser. All housing also has access to laundry facilities.
The Resident Student Association is available for help and support, and ensures that students are enjoying their time in student housing. It also provides campus events, advocacy initiatives, and leadership opportunities throughout the year.
The university offers a range of world-class sports and facilities to its students. This includes facilities for basketball, football, swimming, and wrestling, as well track and field activities.
There are also 14 fitness facilities on campus, ten of which are available to use 24-hours a day.
The university offers a range of subject-specific facilities, including: 16 libraries, with over 4.4 million volumes and collections across them. The largest of these libraries is the Hillman Library, which houses books and collections for several areas of study, including humanities and social sciences, psychology, and computer science.
The Health Sciences Library System contains several libraries which exist to support the research, patient care, and service activities of the schools of the health sciences as well as the hospitals at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
From the moment an international student accepts a place, the Office of International Services assists with the immigration process. From arriving on campus and finding housing, to connecting with the university’s international community, students are fully supported.
The university runs an International Student Pre-Orientation for new undergraduates, and students can also move into their accommodation before domestic students in order to settle in. In addition to this, The Global Ties Mentors, a group of student volunteers, mentor new international students and help them with any questions or concerns.
The “Outside the Classroom Curriculum” initiative focuses on the all-around development of a student, helping them grow in several areas, including: leadership, sense of self, career preparation, communication skills, wellness, and initiative.
In order to help international students connect with their peers, there are over 400 student organizations to join. Groups range from academic, hobby, sport, international interests, politics and more. There is also a range of student groups that focus on fostering friendship among international students too.
The Office of Disability Resources and Services supports and advises disabled students. It can arrange: tape-recorded books, sign language interpreters, adaptive computer technology, Braille translation, nonstandard exam arrangements, and more.
The University of Pittsburgh offers a variety of services to help keep students safe while studying at the institution.
This includes providing a bus and shuttle system which has various routes around campus. In addition to this, the university also provides a SafeRider service, a non-emergency van which is available to transport students at night and in the early hours of the morning. The van takes students between campus buildings and local residences within the university boundaries.
The university has its own police department, which provides security services. Students can contact them by using the emergency call boxes located throughout the campus.
There is also an Emergency Notification Service, which provides information via voice, text and email to students and staff, should an emergency occur.
