International relations studies global issues such as diplomacy, foreign policy, the military, human rights, economies, trade and international organisations. International relations studies a world divided among different countries, and the relationship between power, policy and government in and between those countries. Its elements include diplomacy, foreign policy, military affairs, human rights, international political economy and trade, international organisations like the United Nations, and global issues such as inequality, weapons proliferation, terrorism and environmental cooperation.International relations also seeks to understand the role of 'middle powers' (like Australia) in a world that also includes a 'super power' (like the United States) and 'small powers' (many poorer states). It asks key questions about war and peace, about how to maintain a ‘rules-based global order,’ and about who gets to participate in global decision-making for our shared future.
