What will I learn?

Hone your analytical skills. Become an independent thinker. Form and articulate judgements based on argument and evidence. Lead the way. With arts and humanities at the University of Sydney consistently recognised as among the top 30 faculties globally in university rankings, our Bachelor of Arts degree is both highly regarded by academic leaders and highly sought after by industry employers. Offering access to more than 45 subject areas in the humanities and social sciences, no two arts degrees are the same at Sydney, which means you’ll graduate with a unique skillset and career options as varied as the degree itself. Whether you want to learn a new language or study a new culture, explore great books, ideas or minds, discover the past, analyse the present or consider the shape of the world's future, the Bachelor of Arts will expand your horizons and challenge you to think outside the box.Linguistics is the study of human language. It aims to find out what language is like, and why, and to find ways to use this knowledge in understanding communication, culture, social life, and the human mind. Each of the world's 6000 languages is a rich and textured system, with its own sounds, its own grammar, and its own identity and style. You will learn how we use language for persuading others, gathering information, organising our activities, gossiping, and ultimately structuring our societies. You will become a language and communication expert. The skills you will acquire in linguistics can be used in the study of the human mind and the diversity of cultures which are relevant to a range of professional settings such as international relations, travel, community development, language teaching, general education, academic research, journalism and publishing, marketing and public relations, and computer science.
